OK, two AIBU in one day - I am in a ranty mood!

So last week I had to take a punnet of peaches back to tescos because they had gone mouldy before their best before date. And yesterday, about to prepare a lovely anniversary meal for my husband I pulled out my bag of sweet potatoes (best before 12th June) and they had all gone mouldy! I'm disgusted that two fresh items out of the same shopping load I have had to return, not only that but I am 9 months pg, I have better things to do than go to bloody Tescos to take back their crappy food.

I'm not shopping there again

YABU If you insist on buying something which is dumped in a sweaty plastic bag and then flown halfway round the world from South America or wherever so you can have the privelege of eating it in, I don't know, Aldershot, for example, it's not unreasonable to assume that it's going to be a bit worse for wear surely?

I would like to claim the upper moral hand here about food miles and buying in season food, but I'm afraid I can't

However, I'm reasonable enough to know that I am unreasonable for being a hypocrite

ive never thought of taking back food that goes off before its use by dates

a lot of chicken i have bought recently really stinks when i take it out the packet, even 2-3 days before use by, i just throw it away because i dont want to risk it

my mince goes brown

my pears go from solid to slushy mould

my bread goes mouldy

salad goes watery

i shop at tesco

maybe i should use my farmers shop more.

or just go to sainsburys

-- can i just add, that the co - op in my area has the WORST fresh (yeh right) fruit and veg department i have EVER seen

I see your point sixofone, and I do agree with you, but the only reason we went to tescos this time is because DH and I are on a serious budget drive, and though I hate Tescos, they are the only supermarket open late enough for when DH gets back from work, and being 9 months pg I am struggling with the shopping on my own. So how do you balance conflicting priorities of being ethical and eco friendly, shopping on a budget and eating healthily (which perhaps means buying fruit and veg out of season because it's the only healthy stuff I can persuade DH to eat)?

Thats why i think supermarkets are everything thats wrong about this country. They claim their product is 'fresh' but how on earth can it be fresh when it has been flown in from around the world. I think of it like this, if say there are 400 Tescos stores around the country and each store has one box of something, say lettuce for example, then thats 400 boxes of 'fresh' lettuces they have to ship out everyday! Thats alot of lettuce! So i guess the supermarket piles loads of pressure on suppliers to grow this stuff, godness knows how and where, but it surely aint fresh!

aquababe · 11/06/2007 11:27

i'm so fed up with crap tasteless mouldy food from tesco I've started growing my own. I was so sick of getting mouldy vegetables

it's now sainsburys or my garden (Don't have a proper farm shop.)

Sixofone · 11/06/2007 11:29

Well, not sure really Bump! But this year I have grown lettuce in pots, tomatoes and runner beans in a hanging basket and some potatoes in a dustbin at home precisely because I too hate the way salad etc turns to slime the second you take it out of the fridge and so far, the salad has been yummy and more or less free And I do try and get to the market on a Thurs because it is definitely cheaper (but am just as guilty of doing a Tesco dash as the next person)! However am not 9 months pregnant

bumperlicious · 11/06/2007 11:37

I certainly am going to try and shop more locally and go to the farmers market or just the normal market when the baby is here (though it's been impossible until now as I worked full time) but it's just so much more expensive, which is another conflict for us. We live in a flat and don't have proper window sills so can't really grow our own stuff either.

Either way, I won't be shopping at Tescos any more, and very rarely did anyway.
