Adverse weather supposedly coming

AIBU this is over the top panicking

What if your taxi driver mostly self employed - and it’s 2 weeks of snow/black ice loss of earnings, how do you live or pay bills??

Or like self employed delivery drivers?

AIBU to say there must be a way to predict weather sooner for people to prepare in such adverse weather!

YABU. It's too vast, and complex, with too many factors, some of which we don't know, some of which are too random, and some of which humanity keeps fucking over. Forecasting is improving, but the further out you go, the more it's basically hitting chaos theory.

Trialsmum · 22/09/2018 18:46

They predict the worst winter ever every bloody year 🙄

SleepingStandingUp · 22/09/2018 18:49

Our taxi drivers charge double, they did not end up poor last winter!!

AnguaResurgam · 22/09/2018 18:51

Well, you could either:

a) believe The SUn today who appeared to be saying there would be four months of snow starting in November, or

b) get over to the MN 'weather' topic where a couple of well informed (amateur) metereologists willoom look at an interpret the underlying data. Sometimes starting threads when they spot something interesting cominhpg up, and always answering questions from others

PawPawNoodle · 22/09/2018 18:51

How inconsiderate of the weather to be so unpredictable! I'm sure the wind is getting a good telling off from meteorologists as we speak.

In answer to your AIBU, yes you are being unreasonable. You live in a country with adverse weather conditions so it is not a shocker, and a self-employed person should be putting money away for eventualities such as this especially when doing a job like driving, which can be done during the months with more reliable weather or just go to work anyway, if you're a professional driver then you should be able to navigate snow

hammeringinmyhead · 22/09/2018 18:52

Have you been reading the Express? They love a good made-up weather apocalypse.

LEMtheoriginal · 22/09/2018 18:54

AnguaResurgam yes! I always open a thread by a woman with a naughty cat!! Better than any weather site!

Housingcraze · 22/09/2018 18:56

Well the taxi driver I know barely meets ends and does 60/70 hrs

So it not same everywhere??

Depends on area also not all car are able to navigate snow! And they not supposed to double fares???

If your private hire with jobs coming in from company- then your get plenty of work but if you own business then you hardly get any work at all.

Light hearted post here!!! Regarding the papers silly Articles 😛

SleepingStandingUp · 22/09/2018 19:03

And they not supposed to double fares???!
Are you saying they aren't supposed to or asking if I think they shouldn't? They provide a service, I can choose to use it or not - they're taking the greater risk than me so they can do what they want. Had we needed one for hospital I'd probably be more grumpy as it would have cost me a fortune but still. Their car, their gamble

Bloodybridget · 22/09/2018 19:07

The "worst winter ever" articles in the Sun and Express are as predictable as their "UK to swelter as scorching temperatures hit Britain". They just love an apocalyptic weather story.

Bombardier25966 · 22/09/2018 19:14

@SleepingStandingUp In many areas fares are set by the local authority. They can't just charge what they want.

Delivery drivers (and those in the gig economy) do struggle in adverse weather, so they continue to work for as long as they can. It's all well and good saying they should have a contingency, but when you're barely making minimum wage that may not be possible.

Bombardier25966 · 22/09/2018 19:17

I know a DPD driver that had couldn't work for three days when the weather was at its worst. He's self employed, and because of their onerous service terms he got "fined" the equivalent of two weeks earnings.

I understand DPD have relaxed such terms after one of their drivers died when he couldn't afford to take a day off work to see a doctor.

Bombardier25966 Well they def do. I understand they get less work so understand why

Housingcraze · 22/09/2018 19:29

My friend aims to get 700 quota a week minus bunisess expenses it’s 350 a week before tax so
Roughly = 20000 gross doing 60/70 hours Per week

whats actually been said is they can't accurately predict anything beyond 30 days in the future.. however, current conditions are pointing at their being a dip in pressure which could bring a prolonged period of cold weather from November, but its not confirmed, because that's impossible.

If that's not enough notice to get proper winter tyres, snow chains and prep your business for weather, then how much time do you need?

Its autumn/winter. It snows.
