To think this is unreasonable of this AirBNB host

I didn’t want to book but DH talked me into it because it was cheap.

We have no key. Before we came through the door she asked for ID Hmm cue rummaging around through bags. Then asked what hours we were doing Confused

So basically we have no key.

I don’t know whether to try and get a refund? Or AIBU?

Yes, that was the first thing I asked for!

She said ‘I don’t give keys out.’

Gr8viii · 22/09/2018 19:29

Yes well so do I naked but it’s advertised as a double room for two people Hmm

Did the owner run a seaside B&B in a former life?. Grin

bevelino · 22/09/2018 19:41

OP, you need to report this to Airbnb as the host is meant to give you a key. I have stayed in Airbnb’s all over Europe and at times have booked a room in a house where the host lives and I have never encountered a situation where a front door key has not been provided.

Fontrieu · 22/09/2018 19:43

But you waited until page 2 to confirm that you had already specifically asked for a key?
Then why haven't you contacted Airbnb?
Nakedavenger can see your point but her OH talked her into it because it was cheap. Everyone needs a break don't they?

Gr8viii · 22/09/2018 19:44

I don’t know how to contact air bnb. No point having a go at me because I didn’t include all the information I should have.

OP posts:
Fontrieu · 22/09/2018 19:50

Ach, there were vast comments on page 1 asking 'have you asked for a key?' eventually you replied 'I will ask for a key'.
Now you say you did first off?
As far as trying to help you goes, I'm out.

The number for Airbnb is on their site/communication that you received.

Or just google Premier Inn.

Dollymixture22 · 22/09/2018 19:58

You sound quite irritable. Tbh I would ask for Id if someone was staying In my house. I have also been asked for Id in a lot of hotels all over the place. I have never been offended or annoyed.

This is a business transaction. Treat it like that. You would be better asking for a refund and going to hotel - I don’t think this type of accommodation suits you. That’s not a dig - I am not laid back enough to stay in airnub and I have never stayed in a H&M. I like cool detached hosts who are behind a desk and I like to know exactly what to expect for everyone!!!

It’s a holiday - go somewhere you can relax.

Crossfitgirl · 22/09/2018 19:59

Stop farting about and be assertive. tell her You want a key or you won't be staying and will be contacting air b&b for a refund if she doesn't hand one over.
It's a basic thing.

Dollymixture22 · 22/09/2018 19:59

It is true that I have never stayed in an H&M but I meant b&b

ChasedByBees · 22/09/2018 20:01

It sounds awful, my sympathies OP!

Alpacanorange · 22/09/2018 20:07

Awful, key or leave, why a couple would want to share a house with strangers I can not fathom. Talk about awkward.

LadyFidgetAndHerHandbag · 22/09/2018 20:07

I think with airbnb you get what you pay for. I always go for whole home option because I don't go on holiday to spend time with strangers.
It's normal to want ID but I think airbnb do this normally rather than the host, that's certainly what happened to me.
If you've asked explicitly for a key and she's refused I'd get in touch with airbnb, they will have an email address and number on their website and Google exists for a reason.

overnightangel · 22/09/2018 20:14

So where actually are you at this present moment OP?

musmusculus · 22/09/2018 20:19

Like @crossfitgirl says, be assertive. Between the two of you, you haven't been able to sort this out yet? Its very easy to find how to report this to airbnb. In the meantime say key or you're off, having researched alternatives.

Gr8viii · 22/09/2018 20:28

Well, we were just trying to keep costs down and £25 a night is cheap.

reallybadidea · 22/09/2018 20:31

I think this is the third thread complaining about Airbnb that I've read in the last two days. Weird.

LakieLady · 22/09/2018 20:32

Well, we were just trying to keep costs down and £25 a night is cheap.

You get what you pay for, and £25 a night obviously doesn't include a key!

Just go out, and ring the doorbell when you get back.

BabyDereksToes · 22/09/2018 20:39

Perhaps the lady will get bored of answering the door to you and end up giving you a key!

Gr8viii · 22/09/2018 20:56

That’s great lakie if she’s in

OP posts:
LadyFidgetAndHerHandbag · 22/09/2018 23:13

You really need to get in touch with airbnb OP.

ggirl · 22/09/2018 23:26

Just spent 3 nights in a fabulous AirBnB in Penzance , but whole house , no way would I book room only , I would go to a hotel and tell the owner why you're going. Whether you are justified in getting a refund depends on if she gave incorrect information re. the key surely ?
There is an option to contact AirBnB on all the correspondence and checking in email you get.
I have found AirBnb to be very good customer service wise.

inquiquotiokixul · 23/09/2018 05:39

Go to the premier inn.
Complain to AirBnB about the lack of key meaning that it's impossible for you to enjoy a holiday as you won't be able to relax with access to your accommodation and possessions having to be negotiated on a daily basis.

I respect the host's right to choose not to give out keys - it's their home, and it would be a massive security issue and probably invalidate insurance - but in that case they shouldn't accept bookings for more than one night.

FrannySalinger · 23/09/2018 06:33

What's unreasonable is my Airbnb guests waking me up (drunk) (them not me) at 2am this morning because despite having a key and a separate entrance to the house, they 'couldn't open the door'.

It's a key. You turn it. Dipsticks.

OneStepSideways · 23/09/2018 06:49

Of course she has to give you a key! You're paying for the room and need to be able to access it, even if plans change and she's out when you need to get in.

I'd try the very firm no nonsense approach. Say you'll report her to AirB&B, claim a refund and leave a bad review. If no luck phone AirB&B and they will talk to her.
