House guest with stomach bug

Not sure if I'm BU as I have history of strained relationship with in-laws, so wanted to sound it out on here in case I overreact unnecessarily. In-laws have just been on holiday to Morocco and are staying with us tonight before they drive home tomorrow. (Husband collected them from the airport earlier). So fil has come back with diarrhoea (no vomiting). Seems not too bad in himself but says he has been taking lots of Imodium andooks quite ashen. We have a 2.5 year old and a 4 month old and he has already kissed my 2 year old and she's been climbing all over him, despite me saying to leave him alone as he's a bit poorly. The in-laws are playing it down, saying it's probably just the water change or something he ate. Aibu to feel annoyed at them staying here and potentially making us all ill? I'm currently hiding myself away upstairs 'feeding the baby' to minimise any contact between them. Aibu? I do have anxiety, particularly relating to health and i sometime lose perspective, especially where they are concerned. I can't wait until tomorrow when they leave.and I can get the bleach out.

Most stomach bugs are spread by faecal/oral contact, so as long as he washes his hands thoroughly after each episode of diarrhoea you will probably be ok.
There are exceptions like norovirus, but he would have been vomiting as well with that.
I’d bleach the loo after he’s been, including the seat.
Make sure he takes plenty of fluids, and encourage him to take fruit juice with a little salt added, as he’ll be short of sodium and potassium if he’s been ill for a few days.
If he doesn’t settle within a few days of returning to Britain, he should see his GP and may need a stool sample to rule out the nastier options he could have picked up abroad (Such as Giardia, Shigella, etc)

I can empathise as have had in-laws and DH all with stomach bug whilst I was pregnant and looking after 11 month old.

I think you are being a bit oversensitive as it's not like it was a planned visit whilst ill - they are collecting their car and leaving in the morning.

Hopefully, you won't all get ill, too. Cut them some slack, without getting too close!!

Yabu. It could be something he ate. But one of my children might get an upset stomach - it’s very rare it spreads to other family members with proper hygiene.

Ok thank you all, it's good to get perspective of the situation! I'll try to lighten up a bit :-) sometimes it just snowballs in my head. Thanks again.
*still getting the bleach out tomorrow though! Grin

It's probably something he ate or drank in Morocco so very unlikely you will pick it up.

AliceRR · 22/09/2018 21:28

I don’t think you’re being completely unreasonable. He’s there and might not expect him not to have come over as planned but he could stay out of the way / got to bed and not be kissing your kids when he could have who knows what fe abroad!!

I’m sure it’s fine and I hope you don’t get ill but I wouldn’t be happy with him all over the kids.

Bleach the toilet and wipe door handles etc antibacterial 😷

mum11970 · 22/09/2018 21:31

Your fil’s diarrhoea is more likely to be due to something he ate rather than a virus. I wouldn’t worry too much if I was you, unlikely he’ll pass anything on.

letsdolunch321 · 22/09/2018 21:33

As a pp said wash all door handles and the toilet flush button with bleach. Very important with tummy upsets these things are carried out.

I can't imagine turning a parent away because they were ill.

Where would they stay tonight if not with you? I'd expect proper hygiene etc but it's a risk you take when part of a family.
