To ignore people on the street preaching

Went to the shop this morning with DD in the pram, and two doors away from my house I was approached my 2 Jehovahs Witnesses, who wouldn't stop talking and telling me Jesus loves me but I will go to hell if I don't read the bible.
I tried to stop rhe convosation and walk away, but they followed!!
Reached the next street, and there were more groups of twos knocking on people's doors- would i be rude to just say no thanks and carry on walking!

Just refer them to Matthew 6:5-9

5 And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.
6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.
8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

I need to get it printed on cards to give out.

I’m in the situation where I’ve been nice and polite to an elderly JW gentleman and his friend and now they’re at my door regularly. I’ve told them that I’m not a believer (in their god anyway) but I take their literature and they’re always very polite. I have read the watchtower a few times and it’s not my cup of tea, but I haven’t got the heart to tell them that I’m not into it. 😂They’re not bothering me though so not an issue really.

There is an increasing amount of Mormons where I live and I get stopped a lot and it’s annoying. I used to have a quick chat but often found myself having to justify my beliefs to complete strangers so these days I just tell them that I’m not comfortable discussing such private matters with them, and most of the time they listen. If they don’t I tell them I have frozen stuff in my bag and I need to go home to get it in the freezer (which is often true). 🤓

ThatLibraryMiss I can never remember the exact quote but I usually ask them something similar if I get trapped and can't get past. 😁

I know someone who is now Wiccan but was brought up JW; he knows scripture inside out and is great for tying any annoying god botherers up in knots.

A friend had a suspicion that she was used as a training facility by her local kingdom hall. She regularly used to get knocks at the door by a couple of people, always the same older bloke but a different younger person every time. The older bloke used to just stand back silently with a faint smile, and let her argue theology and scripture for over an hour with the other doorknocker. 😀

I used to live in a busy area that the American/Canadian Mormons doing missionary work used to patrol and it really made me hate them TBH.

In what other circumstance is it “okay” for two men to follow a woman pushing a pram hassling her even as she walks faster to try and get away from them?

A couple times I saw them chalk religious crap all over one of the busiest town centre streets then line up across it so they could accost anyone walking up or down it - people just trying to get to/from work or get lunch FFS.

tor8181 · 29/09/2018 23:51

i always say no chance with me im a complete atheist goodbye

luckycat007 · 29/09/2018 23:57

Can't have been, as others said they don't believe in hell and if on the stands will speak to you only if you have shown an initial interest.

I have more of a problem with the ones who shout and scream their divine msgs when all everyone else wants to do is get in and out of marks as quick as possible etc

Flyaway78 · 29/09/2018 23:57

If it’s Jehovah’s Witnesses tell them you’re on your way to give blood - my DH did and it worked a treat.

that made me laugh ...

LegallyBrunet · 30/09/2018 00:00

We have a guy in the city centre who just stands preaching into a microphone. I think he’s some extreme branch of Christianity from what he says. He gets a lot of abuse. He did make me giggle the other day though, ‘Jesus tells us to love everyone, the Jews, the Buddhists, the Muslims, the Hindus... and maybe the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ 😂

Rememberfluffthecat · 30/09/2018 00:05

A witness would would never say read the bible or go to hell. What a lot of tosh nor would they follow you down the road in any circumstance. If you want to stand and chat then fine. If not then go on your way but don't make up stupid stories!

EmperorTomatoRetchup · 30/09/2018 00:13

I bought a vacuum cleaner online and the bloke delivered it and then spent an hour trying to recruit me to his whack job Christian cult, tried to convince me I was being 'called to god' and we were living in the last days. I felt like saying, fuck the hoover, if the day of judgement is upon us, I'll give the vacuuming a swerve.

Lauren0rder · 30/09/2018 00:19

Agree with Fluff.....JWs would never say what you have said they did.

They wouldn’t say Jesus loves you or that you are going to hell so tell the truth in what they actually said but don’t post lies.

They probably asked you if you think God cares about you individually and wanted to show you a scripture.

It must be hard going door to door.

ARainbowsMum · 30/09/2018 00:23

I don't know about jahovas witnesses but we get a lot of street preachers where I live now.

One particular man stands outside McDonald's opposite an equally busy cafe with a microphone attached to a large speaker preaching the word of god. Its disruptive as every shop on the stretch is forced to listen. I have nothing against preachers but don't agree with bellowing through a microphone and forcing people to listen to your views when they're going about their business or trying to enjoy a meal or coffee.

There are others who board busses and stand on the top deck preaching to all of the passengers.

I respect others beliefs but strongly disagree with them being thrust upon you whether you like it or not, some people can be very extreme.

I got talking to a seemingly nice christian lady at a bus stop last year who was handing out little books, I happily took one to read on the bus then threw it away after two pages in it mentioned the end of time and doomsday!

I'm yet to have a JW come to my door but I did have before I moved from a smaller town, perfectly pleasant young men who happily left and wished me a good day when I said I was too busy.

SemperIdem · 30/09/2018 00:26

I ignore them. They’re intrusively trying to shove their beliefs in my face. That is rude.

tillytop · 30/09/2018 00:31

I don't see why OP would be lying? To what benefit?

ShannonRockallMalin · 30/09/2018 00:32

The JWs where I live just set up a little information stand on market day but I’ve never seen them try to actually speak to anyone, and I always walk past them without issue on my lunch break. I always think there must be more useful things to do with one’s time than sit on a bench waiting to convert a passing heathen.

There seems to have been a spate of young American Mormons coming into the library where I work recently - I assume our area is on their current hit list. They seem to use the library as a base when out door knocking. I did feel a bit sorry for a couple of them the other day when I noticed them earnestly praying in a corner with one of our regular ‘customers’, a frequently drunk down and out guy who I am sure was only professing faith to get a meal or some cash out of them!

Purplecrocsrock · 30/09/2018 08:28

Ooh yeah sorry i was lying Hmm for what reason? If i was to lie I'd make up something far more interesting

OP posts:
Lauren0rder · 30/09/2018 15:39

I think you think that’s what they said but that’s not what they say.

TrueLoveWays · 30/09/2018 15:41

They don't believe in hell so can't have been Jehovah Witnesses

JeremyCorbynsBeard · 30/09/2018 15:54

Just tell them there's no such thing and they must completely thick to believe it. If that doesn't work then tell them you want their names and will report them for harassment. Fucking nutters the lot of them.

Lauren0rder · 30/09/2018 15:57

And they aren’t nutters either.

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 30/09/2018 16:01

I just say I'm an atheist and they tend to thank me for my time and move on, I've never encountered any rudeness or pushing

Angiemum23 · 30/09/2018 16:03

I say I'm a Wiccan
