To have taken my toddler out in the rain?

My little boy is nearly 19 months old. he's a very active and busy child, and loves nothing more than running around. We've been cooped up for nearly 2 weeks due to a virus, so yesterday was the first chance in ages to go out. All he's wanted to do the last week is walk up and down the stairs and run around, with so much built up energy.

Now DS is like a puppy, he's a bundle of energy so needs a lot of exercise and fresh air. Plus, I just love taking him outside. Anyway, in the morning, it was a little drizzly and windy but nothing to bad. I bundled DS up in a vest, jumper, thick trousers, all in one rain suit and wellies, and went to the park. He had a great time running around and playing on the swings/slide. We were there probably about 45 minutes. A woman was walking with her dog and friend, and saw them a few times.

At one point, they smiled at DS and fussed over him a little. Then woman with the dog piped up that he shouldn't be out in the rain, he needs to home where it's warm. She wasn't necessarily rude, but it was a little clipped in the way she said it. I just said that we've been stuck in for nearly a fortnight due to colds etc, so nice to be out. She just have a forced smile then went.

It made me feel like shit to be honest :(

Was I/am I unreasonable for taking my toddler out when the weather is not great? He was warm and dry, and obviously I wouldn't bother if it was torrential rain or gale force winds. It was misty rain and light wind/bit cold at the time! It's not like I left him run around completely naked.

Do you or did you used to take your kids out when it's a bit windy/raining?

AT DC's school and nursery before it we had to bring in waterproofs as they go out in (almost) all weather. That was one of the reasons I liked it. Great for kids to be out and about everyday if possible.

Verbena87 · 22/09/2018 11:54

She’s ludicrous. Should have done a tinkly laugh and said “the thing is, we wash in our house so I’ve discovered that humans are waterproof. Amazing, eh?!”

Dollymixture22 · 22/09/2018 11:54

Take him out in the rain if he likes it! My heavens what a stupid patronising woman. It’s not like he was running around in the snow with no shoes on!

Let’s hope he is always so outdoorsy and enegrenti!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 22/09/2018 11:54

FGS, the woman is mad! Just ignore.
Fine to be out whatever the weather if they're appropriately dressed.

A Swedish friend told me that her Gdcs at daycare in Stockholm play out every single day - rain, snow, whatever - and it gets bloody cold there in winter.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 22/09/2018 12:00

My friends DCs go to a fully outdoor nursery, so they're out every single day. YANBU - I also had a small child who needed to be ran every day, woman is an idiot.

Tartsamazeballs · 22/09/2018 12:02

Nah she's nucking futs... But then I call the puddles in my garden an au natural splash pad so maybe I'm a bit too far gone the other way 😁

PlatypusPie · 22/09/2018 12:02

Toddlers, splashy puddles and wellies - magic combination ! Though if accompanying adult has splash friendly clothes as well)

Mummyoflittledragon · 22/09/2018 12:04

The woman would think me awful then. I didn’t yet have wellies when dd was very little but had a puddle suit - she’d not been walking long. So I got her to play in the garden in her puddle suit for a while with bare feet. It was a warmer, wet day than today btw. Young children need to spend lots of time running off all the energy. Nothing wrong with taking your ds out at all in any weather. He won’t melt.

Gillian1980 · 22/09/2018 12:05

Yanbu.
My dd loves going to the park in the rain! Wrapped up in waterproofs and wellies, place to herself and lots of puddle splashing. Though wet slides and waterproofs are terrifying haha.

BerriesandLeaves · 22/09/2018 12:05

It's September. Is she expecting you to keep him in between now and 1st June?.

AlphaBravo · 22/09/2018 12:07

We go out whatever the weather. Even torrential.

Only bad clothes and moaning arses not bad weather.

Gersemi · 22/09/2018 12:09

Surely if she thought it was unsuitable for your DS to be out in the rain, even fully wrapped up, then it was equally unsuitable for her and her dog.

Dollymixture22 · 22/09/2018 12:10

Props and George are now in emergency foster care. Mummy pig might get custody back if daddy pig (who authorised the splashing in muddy pubbles) agreed to move out

Peppa and George

HemanOrSheRa · 22/09/2018 12:14

Ah it's fine! DS loved playing outside whatever the weather. This has reminded me of the time when he was about 4, the weather was shocking, I asked him what he'd like to do and he suggested a walk with our (then) puppy in the fields nearby and a picnic Confused. So we packed up sandwiches etc in his little rucksack, had our walk and then sat on a bench at the side of the A38 eating our picnic in the pouring rain Grin.

Luvly12 · 22/09/2018 12:16

More germs in a warm house than outside in the fresh air.

Yanbu.
Definately not
Shes a cheeky mare

Wanderlusting99 · 22/09/2018 12:16

Unless he's mixed species of human-gremlin he's absolutely fine playing in the rain.

viques · 22/09/2018 12:16

One of my favourite ever pictures and memories of my daughter is the one where we went to the seaside with friends , can't remember which, for the day. It tipped down starting the minute we arrived. Vertical icy stuff like cold little needles.. For about twenty minutes we sat in the car watching it tip down then thought oh bugger it, let the kids out of the back straight on to the deserted beach and let them rip. They ran in and out of the waves, jumped off rocks, drank rain, spun each other round on the sand until they fell over, chased each other with seaweed and got themselves freezing cold and soaking wet. We eventually got them back in the car, looking like shivering slightly blue drowned rats, stripped them off, wrapped them in towels then sat in the car eating fish and chips. A magical day, wouldn't have been the same if it had been sunny and warm and the beach filled with other people.

LIVIA999 · 22/09/2018 12:19

When mine were toddlers I used to take them for a daily walk in every weather. I remember standing in a park in torrential rain and we only left when the thunder and lightening started as I got worried We might get hit by lightening!
I'd carry on taking your little one out and ignore people they've always got an opinion. Yours is the only one that matters.

Chelseajunior · 22/09/2018 12:20

Ignore her, the busy body! I take mine out in all sorts of weather as long as they are dressed correctly Smile

LIVIA999 · 22/09/2018 12:20

@viques my mum has the same kind of picture of me and my siblings when we were kids. She says the same- it was the best day.

SodTheBloodyLotOfThem · 22/09/2018 12:21

Ah fond memories of the time DSis and I promised her 4yo DS and our 4yo cousin a trip to the fancy Park and a bbq. Tipped it down but we pressed on, even bbq'ing sausages holding cardboard over the top so it didn't get cold Grin

Funny enough we were approached by a dog walking lady, but she came over to give us her (vair vair posh) nod of approval.

steppemum · 22/09/2018 12:22

you sound amazing, I have a lovely picture in my head of a toddler squealing and running round in and out of puddles with wind making him laugh. What a lovely thing for him to do.

Of course he shouldn't be inside, as long as he is warm and dry!

I lived somewhere where is was below freezing for 6 months of the year. On with the snow suits and out we went. Every day.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 22/09/2018 12:23

Snowflakes melt in the rain.
A toddler in wellies in the rain with puddles to jump into is in heaven!

Celebelly · 22/09/2018 12:23

Cheeky madam!

There's an outdoor forest nursery near where we live which I'm desperate for our kid to go to when he/she is here. They are out and about all day in all weathers and just have a little hut in the forest for when it's extremely inclement. It looks amazing.
