Does the size of a teacher make difference to their ability to teach?

Would you be concerned if your child’s teacher was of significantly reduced mobility due to being overweight?
If you are a teacher in early years/ks1/ks2+
Would it limit your teaching?

Where's your evidence of this please? Particularly interested in the intelligence part.

saveforthat · 24/09/2018 18:46

I thought this was going to be about short peopleSmile

One of my very good friends is a teacher and is quite big. She's done reception, I worked with her. She's now a Senco and part of the SLT. Hasn't affected her at all.

Sparklesocks · 24/09/2018 18:52

UnrelentingFruitScoffer I have never read anything about a link between weight and intelligence testing, can you link your source?

Rockhopper81 · 24/09/2018 18:52

I, too, am interested in the evidence that being overweight/obese is proven to make you less intelligent. Care to share @UnrelentingFruitScoffer. And the phrase you would be looking for - if it were true - is scientifically proven, not medically proven: intelligence is not something to be proven medically.

I have found one study of 2200 people from 2006 which suggests there might be some correlation, but it’s not particularly conclusive...

My child's reception teacher was very overweight. The only thibg I ever thought about the weight issue was that they are always sat on the floor with little kids so it must have been hard. Other than that she was his favourite

I have found one study of 2200 people from 2006 which suggests there might be some correlation, but it’s not particularly conclusive... I guess it depends on where your starting point is. Is it that overweight people are less intelligent because they are overweight or is it that people who are less intelligent are more likely to be overweight. i.e. more societal? In the same way that people on lower incomes are more likely to smoke etc Or indeed it could all be bollocks. I've been both slim and overweight and I don't think my level of intelligence was any different at either point...

memorial · 24/09/2018 20:21

UnrelentingFruitScoffer bollocks I am obese. I am also very bright, have a very high functioning job and score very highly on all intelligence scales. Am pretty damn sure I'm more intelligent than you. Could you reference your narrow minded judginess please

Thighofrelief · 24/09/2018 20:40

One of my DC had a teacher who was a little person. Not one child even mentioned it never mind said anything thoughtless.

My weight has fluctuated through the years. If i am honest, i tend to feel more confident the smaller i am. However i can still do my job and all activities regardless of size. I teach pe, run after runaways (somewhat too often) run around the pitch, evade flying objects, work at various levels and run around like my head is on backwards some days. Whilst i may be mentally exhausted by the end of the day, i am rarely physically exhausted and i work in a very active ASN class. My only real isaue is problems with my ligaments that mean sometimes when teaching movement my arms or legs get stuck or trigger. Whilst painful for me the kids find it hysterical. As for teaching health and wellbeing it's no different than any other subject. We need to look at all people and i can talk about health and how when overweight it might restrict me, i may feel less energetic etc and we talk about and look at different healthy weights and the positives. Please don't be put off teaching due to your weight. If you are a good but fat teacher you can lose weight. If you are a thin/fat but crap teacher that's more difficult to sort.
