To think sugar is slowly killing us?

Ok, that may sound dramatic, but this is something I have been thinking about a lot...

The fact is that most of us are getting fetter. And I think it’s pretty easy to see why, but we are all in denial about it. Redently I have seen threads where people discuss their own typical diet or the diet of their DC, and lots of people will say “oh, that sounds really healthy”, “children need the extra calories”, etc. But the fact is that most people are losing sight of what normal food is and ar drinking and eating huge quantities of sugar without realising it.

I object to having artificial sweeteners sneaked into food and drinks. They were not there before so you don't think to check, then they taste all wrong. I think these are the real enemy and it will all come out when cancer rates go up.

Moderation is the key.

I wish I could self regulate, but I think being told to eat everything on the plate as a child has made me override the ability!

I think there is a balance to be had and things like gaps between eating, not eating late, portion sizes and not having sugar in every sauce and bread really help.

On the other hand cutting out everything or making children fear food is less helpful.

I always had a sweet tooth, as a student I lived on 5 Mars Bars a day. I ate a lot of sugary cereals and snacks over the years.
For the past 18 months I have cut down on my sugar intake. This was prompted by my 15 year old dd doing Home Economics at school, then telling me off about how much sugar I was consuming. I tried to cut down drastically but it didn't improve my health or help me lose weight. So I now eat bananas and apples (no-nos on a low sugar diet) as snacks, and continue to watch my sugar intake at mealtimes. I've cut out biscuits, sweets and cakes. I've lost a small amount of weight since doing this, and I am pleased.

Portion size is a huge problem, as a child if I had dessert it was the size of a fairy cake not the size of a coffee shop muffin. Penis portions always create lots of posts on MN but I was brought up eating smaller portions than men. I need smaller portions, if I ate the same as DP or DS1, I would have a weight problem. Fast food is proven that the more fast food premises the bigger the obesity problems. Even alcohol, my mum would have a rum and coke of an evening whereas I would have a fishbowl of red wine.
