Always an issue in primary where teacher sets work and says ‘it should only take **min max, Anymore stop and hand that it. The reality is child spends longer that 40mins, has a melt down when they can’t finish and misses their lunch break for not completeing the homework.

Secondary seem to be worse- research xyz and create a poster. 1hr max. Never going to only take 1hr.

Eldest is yr7 and has had a melt down over a poster tonight- never had an issue in primary(that’s the youngest and I’m dreading secondary with that one!)

They need to do what they can within the time. Part of the point of that kind of homework is to help them learn to manage their time better. You need to explain that to them and be strict in making them stop when the time is up. If need be, especially at primary, send in a note explaining that to the teacher.

Homework time estimates are just that, estimates.

Personally research and a poster summarising findings is a 45min-1hour homework.

At the start of secondary it's not uncommon for year 7s to get stressed out over homework. It's a totally new way of doing things.

Primary homework is maybe times tables, spellings, reading and maybe one piece of work that they get a week for.

Secondary there's a dozen subjects, different subjects on different days, different frequency of homework.

Part of the transition to secondary is about learning to manage time and homework.

The poster only needs to be colourful with writing on it unless it's for art. This type of homework is common in year 7. Big colourful title, few facts and a couple of printed pictures if you really want to. That's all my son ever did, the teachers marked his homework as good or excellent

NerdyBird · 21/09/2018 20:02

I wish they would only say that to the parents though. DSD2 would stop bang on 30 mins if you let her, or spend most of the time fart-arsing around, do 2 questions and then want to stop.

SayNoToCarrots · 21/09/2018 20:06

As a teacher I don't really see the value of homework before gcse years.

MaisyPops · 21/09/2018 20:31

I see the value in well designed and purposeful homework carrots. I couldn't stand pointless homework.

TwoOddSocks · 21/09/2018 20:37

The primary school sound ridiculous if they say do what you can in 40 minutes but then make them miss their play time if it's not completed!

Screaminginsidemeagain · 21/09/2018 23:24

I know they need to learn time management for secondary!

We have been warning about homework from every subject most nights with DC all summer.

DC is doing really well but has had a lot of ‘projects’ assigned. She has two that are 2-3 weeks work and then a couple of hours every night.
It got a bit much tonight and overwhelmed her.
