to expect very tight security at school?

i came to pick up ds from nursery. The guard should have been at the gate but buzzed me in from the office. I went in thru the automated gate and then a second gate that was also open and into playground and picked up ds from nursey building. When i came out of the premises i saw the guard hadn't closed the gate. (i cant do it, it is automated)

I was flabbergasted, it was playtime for the main school and the kids were a few feet from the street and a busy road. I couldn't see the teacher on duty anywhere in sight.

I complained to the guard - he since had appeared - and he said he could see everything from the camera

I think it is NOT GOOD ENOUGH! Am i unreasonable to expect 100% security?

Is there such a thing as 100% security?

If he could see people coming in and out then what was the problem?

Ladymuck · 10/06/2007 21:12

Our school (also in London) doesn't have a guard. Is this the norm?

BrothelSprouts · 10/06/2007 21:13

I think it is important for the children to be safe, but I am perturbed by schools that look more like prisons, tbh.

stoppinattwo · 10/06/2007 21:13

it would be a problem if he saw a child going out and he is in his little box watching it..........no good once the child has bolted out onto the road!!

BracingAir · 10/06/2007 21:14

his office is not near the gate. some boys wer ekicking a ball and they were already thru the first gate. Its only yards to the main road, and they have run there if there ball had.

so what is the point of weatching it from afar? Oh no...a boy ran out...he is too far to make a difference. Or what if someone walked in...

You won't get 100%, any suggestion that you can is unrealistic imo. Sounds like Fort Knox as it is tbh, how sad

BracingAir · 10/06/2007 21:14

Sounds appalling have you thought about moving ?

BrothelSprouts · 10/06/2007 21:17

So the school pays for a security guard?
I haven't heard of that before.
Sounds rather scary and intimidating.
Although I'm sure he's lovely.

BreeVanDerCamp · 10/06/2007 21:18

BTW welcome to MN, you seem to have found your way around quite quickly.

Good first post.

unknownrebelbang · 10/06/2007 21:18

I am amazed that any school has to have security if I'm honest.

BracingAir · 10/06/2007 21:18

maybe the point is, the guard and the teacher on playground duty cant be doing 100%. But if they lapse at the same time, then accidents can happen more easily.

at the level of security

is it really necessary?

BracingAir · 10/06/2007 21:19

a security guard at a school? how very scary

we're in London

I suppose it depends on the layout of the school though

wheresthehamster · 10/06/2007 21:20

Agree with all the

Why is this level of security necessary? Has there been incidents in the past with escapees and intruders?

security is an long standing unfortunate result of threats to the Jewish community.

whether it was the guard, or a caretaker is notr really relevant. I just didn't expect 7 year old to be playing so near an open gate with no adult in sight
