was thinking about asking the school to provide a fridge for the children on packed lunch to store their lunches.. DD quite often has yoghurt drings or cheese sandwiches, cucumber in her packed lunch. It sits on a table outside their class room till lunch time (some 3 hour)..........it must be vile

Do you think it is a good idea, what do other schools do??

I'm not sure the school's budget will stretch to this - also might not have room?

You could put an ice pack in, or freeze a juice thingy and put it in, will be drinkable by lunchtime and also will keep things cool.

lulumama · 10/06/2007 21:03

ours don;t but i got some of those mini ice packs to put in his lunch box

Flame · 10/06/2007 21:04

Freeze a juice thingy.

Warm yoghurt is one of the things I remember about school... good character buildin stuff

NikkiBFG · 10/06/2007 21:04

Aww Lulumama - that's such a sweet thing to do!

kittylette · 10/06/2007 21:05

Asda have fridegs in at the moment for £59,

you could always ask if they have budget for it.

stoppinattwo · 10/06/2007 21:05

ahhh good idea didnt think of that, there would be room though...if they move the table that they currently put the packed lunches on

I put a freezer block in

BrothelSprouts · 10/06/2007 21:05

Ours had a fridge for packed lunches to go in.
It's an excellent thing for the PTA to fundraise for.
Check it out with the Headteacher, and ask him/her to approach the chair of the parent's committee.

emkana · 10/06/2007 21:07

How big is the school?

With the size of children's lunch bags one fridge wouldn't be enough would it?

jellycat · 10/06/2007 21:07

Ours sit on a shelf above their coat hooks. I put ds's lunch in an insulated lunchbag and pop a small ice block in. Sometimes I pop in a bottle of ice/water too (put half bottle water in freezer the night before, then remove in the morning and fill with water so ice slowly melts), and for yogurts I freeze those squeezy tube yogurts and pop it in frozen in the morning. He tells me it has melted by lunchtime. BTW, dses bag has 2 compartments so I put the stuff that needs to be kept cool in a separate section to anything else.

kittylette · 10/06/2007 21:08

i would ask! its only £59!

im sure the teachers have a fridge in the staff room

stoppinattwo · 10/06/2007 21:08

the school has about 200 kids, there are about 20 on packed lunches

emkana · 10/06/2007 21:10

stoppinattwo · 10/06/2007 21:11

Im going to ask our PTA about it, Im also a school governor so im sure i can assert som authority, but only if it is in the schools and kids best interests of course

unknownrebelbang · 10/06/2007 21:15

I'd get little icepacks tbh.

Off-topic but DS1 took some cooking stuff in a couple of weeks ago, and his box got crushed and broken cos everyone else just shoved theirs on top.

bubblerock · 10/06/2007 21:15

They could ask if anyone has one spare for donation to the school - one of the parents or even freecycle. We never had one when I was at school - just had warm sandwiches

kittylette · 10/06/2007 21:16

lol, soz that was such a stroppy thing to say

its just ive posted a few things lately directly to people to help them out an theyve just skipped right past me! lol

stoppinattwo · 10/06/2007 21:17

OP posts:
kittylette · 10/06/2007 21:17

tryingtomakeadifference · 10/06/2007 21:18

See if one of the parents can donate? Put a note in the newsletter. One might be rich, or have a spare?

stoppinattwo · 10/06/2007 21:18
