To wonder if I’ll get my own pet’s ashes back?

My 14 year old dog who was my best friend in the world had to be PTS last week. I opted for a private cremation as I don’t think I will live here forever, so didn’t want to bury him, and also I’d like to get some jewellery made from his ashes so he’s always with me.

It’s just occurred to me that I have no way of knowing that the ashes returned to me are indeed ddogs. The group cremation option was free, but the individual cremation was two hundred and something pounds. So I’d hope that they would respect the owner’s wishes as they are charging a fair bit, but do they?

I’m sorry if this is an insensitive topic but I was hoping maybe someone with some inside knowledge may be able to to put my mind at ease over this.

Piss off @cholka

My dog was sent to Scotland (5 hours away) which I didn't realise. She was collected before I could stop her going so far so the next day we drove to Scotland and they did a 'same day's cremation. The lady did a paw print for me and took a clipping of her hair getting all her colours. I did worry like you but the hair reassured me. I expect there are strict guidelines around this and they would risk their licenses of misseling services.

My dogs ashes are on her bed and have been for 5 weeks since she was PTS. Eventually I think I will plant them in a moveable planter, but I don't know when that will be.

Pet crematoriums are highly regulated and theirs staff are incredibly compassionate.

You will absolutely only receive your own pet’s ashes

hooveringhamabeads · 21/09/2018 18:40

Thank you everyone :) the vet didn’t mention anything about a paw print or hair clippings so I guess I don’t get those which is a shame. I would have liked that.

OP, so sorry to hear about your much loved dog? Which area are you in? Also, if the vet organised it, they might be able to offer reassurance.

My vet told me a member of staff had gone to the pet crematorium they use for the day, and confirmed they do everything they say, as well as treating the animal with total respect.

Thank you for this timely thread.

I lost one of my beloved dogs suddenly this morning and I was thinking about cremation but had the same fears.

You've all put my mind at ease.

hooveringhamabeads · 21/09/2018 19:00

Sorry to hear that PersonalClown :(

It’s bloody horrible isn’t it.

It's reassuring to read that they treat our beloved animals with respect too. It's the least they deserve!

runsmidgeOMG · 21/09/2018 19:43

I've had two hamsters and a puppy privately cremated. I saw no part of the process but I believe all of the above when they say they're all handled respectfully.
I'm so sorry for your loss. Any animal (big or small) leaves a huge void. Be kind to yourself Thanks

NeeChee · 21/09/2018 19:57

I decided not to have my cat individually cremated. For me losing her so suddenly was hard enough, and collecting her ashes would have been too painful.
I have a clipping of her fur and one of her beautiful white whiskers I found on her favourite sleeping spot which I have saved

Celestia26 · 21/09/2018 20:10

OP I can assure you that you will receive your pet ashes back. I work in this area, and all the Pet Crematoriums I have worked with are respectful and have strict protocols surrounding this.

Tightsonatrain · 21/09/2018 20:18

Just to posting to say we paid for a private cremation and were given a document confirming this with our doggies name on, and also the name and signature of the man who had overseen the cremation. The staff were lovely and respectful.

Sorry for your loss xxx

Alicatz66 · 22/09/2018 07:53

This reassured me .. my poor DCat was PTS a month ago .. it was 30 for her cremation.. she's in a little box with her name on .. on a cushion on the bookshelf where she liked to sleep .. I didn't want to bury her or scatter her as we have to move next year
Ignore goady Cholka

Needahairbrush · 22/09/2018 08:08

Oh this is reassuring, my lovely old cat is nearing the end of his life (we think) and I’m scared of What happens next. Hugs everyone (except cholka)

dudsville · 22/09/2018 08:30

I'm sorry for your loss. They are with us too brief of a time.

My vet has a form and you can select to have your own pet's ashes or some ashes from a group cremation. We get our own. Check with your vet.

9amtrain · 22/09/2018 08:44

@cholka Your input was greatly appreciated I'm sure.

Fucking hell. What a useless, shit post.
