27 miles to go to part-time job from university, can DD do it?

Daughter has been in part time job for 2 years.

Since she got her uni place she looked at transferring stores and applying for jobs in the same town. Absolutely nothing and I was shocking considering her experience in current place. Apparently the jobs must all be taken by students!?

She is pretty keen to keep the job.

She is moving out and it's 27 miles to the store. She has a car and can park it there.

Is it possible?

Her manager has let her drop to just the one shift a week (Sunday) and although only £200 a month, will help and good to show she still works.

Regards

If it’s a job that builds her career - stick with it. If it is any old job then she needs to find one more local to her.

Is she sure she can't transfer stores to one neare

EmmaC78 · 20/09/2018 22:34

Sounds ok. A lot of people do that and more 5 days a week commuting. She should do it short term while still looking for something with less travel.

GreenTulips · 20/09/2018 22:35

How much is it costing in petrol?

Popc0rn · 20/09/2018 22:41

How long does the drive take?

It's possible if she wants to do it.

£200 earnings vs how much in fuel costs?

Honestly it seems a long way to go for one shift unless she makes weekly plans with her mates or something.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 20/09/2018 22:45

So for me it sounds too far-but what is it in real time?

30 mins? 60 mins? is it a hard drive?

how many times a week? how long are shifts?

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 20/09/2018 22:45

sorry see you said re shifts

feeona123 · 20/09/2018 22:53

That used to be my commute to work. Sunday traffic shouldn’t be too bad so I would keep at it.

Icequeen01 · 20/09/2018 22:53

I think it's do-able if sensible. My DS has just started Uni and is commuting 30 miles per day to Uni and also has a part-time job in Tesco in our home town. He is contracted to 15 hours per week with Tesco and often works overtime but will try to keep to just his contracted hours once his workload increases. He drives 7 miles to our nearest train station then has a 20 minute train journey then 20 mins walk to campus.

OK, I drive 38 miles to get to work every day (i.e. 76 miles round trip each day). It costs me around £200 per month. On that basis I would say it is perfectly doable.

It would probably be a good idea to stay at least until after Christmas - I guess there might be extra shifts at that time of year when she is home from uni. Plus she might well find that some of the people who have taken the jobs in the other store give up after a few months. It would be an idea to speak to the manager at the new store and let them know she is continuing to work at her original store but would be interested in a position if one comes up.

If it turns out to be too difficult, she can always give up then. But why decide it's too hard before you've even tried?
