My husband has lost the plot !!

Ok, so hear me out here!!!

In my opinion, DCs (6 and 4) are pretty healthy kids! They exercise a LOT and their diet is, I think, pretty ok!

Example

Breakfast - weetabix with fromage frais, honey and grapes

Snack - milk and a some fruit (or occasionally Pom bears or a 'YoYo' bar for a treat!!)

Lunch - sanwiches with cucumber slices and carrot sticks

Snack - banana or raisins

Dinner - tomato pasta or spaghetti bolognaise or something like that! With veg sticks

So ... my (usually amazing, very sane, very sensible and completely gorgeous lovely he's reading this!!) DH said tonight he thinks the children have too much sugar and we need to cut out the fromage frais and honey in the mornings?

I think ... 'well at least they don't scoff chocolate, don't eat takeaways, and they deserve at least something they like (life is too short to cut out everything, right?)'

So - what do you think!?

Husband is reading this! So please tell him to leave their breakfast alone! They are good, healthy, sporty kids and a fromage frais in the morning won't kill them!?

(Sadly, I am prepared to be told IABU, but you do realise DH will not let me forget it!!)

@iamyourequal YES YES YES.

Sorry forgive my needlessly orgasmic response but actually....OMFG

Fiffyshadesofgreymatter · 20/09/2018 23:09

@CaptainNelson

Macronutrients is the group name for protein, fat and carbohydrate. Doesn't really matter if you're a child or an adult; you need all of those things. No one should be having mainly carbs for breakfast, all carb for snack and mainly dinner.

Meringues4breakfast · 20/09/2018 23:09

It’s a myth that kids must have loads of carbs. You don’t have to do a lot of reading to understand why. Mainstream advice isn’t always correct.

gingergenius · 20/09/2018 23:10

@Akanamali how do you manage your kids' diets then?

Shambu · 20/09/2018 23:11

Pasta does not contain hidden sugar, bread doesn't usually either. They contain complex carbohydrates.

Ordinary pasta is refined carb as is white bread.

Complex carbs still produce x amount of sugar. So one slice of whole meal bread = 12g of carb, around 1.6g of sugar.

PinguDance · 20/09/2018 23:15

I take the view that I’d rather eat plain yoghurt and drink only water and then scoff a bit of cake than a sugary yoghurt with added honey/maple syrup and a fruit juice/water. If you’re going to have sugar you may as well go for it.

frogsoup · 20/09/2018 23:15

Such a lot of bollocks on this thread. Weetabix high in sugar?! It has 4.2g per 100g, ok not sugar-free but really not enough to worry about, it's not like you eat kilos of the stuff in any case. As for replacing full-fat with half-fat milk, that really is insane for small children (and possibly for adults too)

As for the too much fruit makes you fat idea, someone should tell my rail-thin kids, who eat fruit like there's no tomorrow. They'll easily get through 12 apples a day between the three of them, which is clearly excessive in terms of our fruit bill, but in health terms seems to be doing them no harm at all as they are full of apples beans.

@frogsoup It’s teeth that’s the fucker really - I ate a shit ton of raisins as a teenager and had to have 5 fillings in one year. Same for a friend who drank a lot of apple juice. My weight/general health has never been an issue but my dental health is probably going to be painful and expensive

gimeallthecake · 20/09/2018 23:20

Yeah up the protein intake and they will require less sugar. Could they have cheese or meat for lunch? I would cut out raisins. They are terrible for teeth and high in sugar.

fieryginger · 20/09/2018 23:20

Really interesting to read this thread from the beginning. It starts as yanbu then slowly turns to yabu.

I think yanbu.

PinguDance · 20/09/2018 23:21

Also my dentist told me it’s about ‘exposures’ to sugar - you should aim for 5 I think (might be making that up) so its better (for teeth) if you eat a piece of cake and an apple in one go than eat 4 apples in 2 hours.

So what's DH's diet like then, OP? Weetabix or All Bran for breakfast? Sandwich with carrot sticks and cucumber for lunch? Dinner but no pudding in the evening? And absolutely NO beer or any other alchohol - full of calories, and doesn't alchohol convert to sugar? Halo

Akanamali · 20/09/2018 23:25

The OP has asked for opinions because the children's other parents is concerned. People are giving their opinions. No one cares what you feed your children and you're free to give them as many gingerbread men as you like.

Ethylred · 20/09/2018 23:26

Why are you so invested in the fromage frais?

Strokethefurrywall · 20/09/2018 23:29

iamyourequal said it best.

What a bunch of po-faced sugar wankers on this thread, Jaysus.

And I don't even eat processed sugar!! But you can bet I don't sit obsessing over how much of it my kids eat.

Honestly are people totally incapable of coherent and educated thought these days?

My eldest has toast with honey most days or weetabix. I couldn't even drum up the energy to worry about the damage that smidge of honey will be having on his teeth (clue: none).

The only rules I have is no low-fat shit. Full fat all the way in our house.

Sharkwithknees · 20/09/2018 23:32

He's totally discredited himself for suggesting cutting out the honey Grin

PinguDance · 20/09/2018 23:32

Well a smidge of honey prob won’t affect a child’s teeth or health no - moderate to high sugar throughout the day as described in OP’s menu plan might. That’s what people are saying.

gingergenius · 20/09/2018 23:33

I find it poetic that @Meringues4breakfast doesn't understand carbs

gingergenius · 20/09/2018 23:34

@PinguDance
And anyone else here... everything in moderation yes?

SylvanianFrenemies · 20/09/2018 23:35

Can't believe there are people ringing their hands over the sugar in fucking fruit (and bread!).

Fruit is a good thing. Naturally occurring fruit sugars are fine, a good source of energy accompanied by nutrients and dietary fibre.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

It's completely possible to disagree without being a twat. The fact that you don't seem to be aware of this suggests that maybe you're not as bright as you imagine.

RomanyRoots · 20/09/2018 23:37

LTB

That's a really healthy diet.

PinguDance · 20/09/2018 23:39

@gingergenius I don’t really know how I’ve ended up on this thread repeatedly as am not known for my general interest in diets - but won’t someone think of the teeth! I mean it’s not going to kill you but you don’t need that much sugar and you could cut some of it out - I think I’m channeling my mother who successfully protected me from existence of cereal other than bran flakes and shredded wheat for about 15 years (I win though cos I actually really like bran flakes).
