Crime number but insurance has gone up

My grandson passed his test at the beginning of the year. Within a few weeks of driving an elderly driver on medication ploughed into him and wrote off the car.
We have been having gang related issues for a couple of years. My grandson has been threatened on many occasions. His friend was fatally stabbed and another stabbed in the leg but survived. He is 18 goes to work, sees friends and rarely goes out. for fear of being attacked. He has not been to town in 3 years. His freedom has been curtailed for all that time. They tried running him over chasing him with a knife several times , running him off the road, smashed my car up tried to break into my home ( where he lives) He has often had to run for his life. The police are building a case against them but each time there is little evidence. One of them is actually on parole and the probation office did not recall him which I find outrageous. All we get each time is the lack of evidence and now he cant even have the basic right to drive to work.Hi

The most recent case was When they set him up to go and purchase something(Thought It was a regular person). He was lured into a dead end.As soon as he reached the end they pounced - there were about six of them and attacked his new car with hammers and tried to get him out of the car , while smashing all the windows. These thugs are known to the police but little has been done. Apparently it is insufficient evidence name and identify your attacker. While trying to manoeuvre the car at this dead end trying to get away, he then reversed into a parked car fleeing for his life I must add!
We have crime number for all these incidents. The latest was a phone call saying he was going to be burned alive. I have had to put my flat on the market for sale.
At his car's been smashed up againHe has now amount of the van. The insurance has now been quoted as £8,000 Because of the claims.
This seems totally unfair as non-of the incidents were his fault.
It seems that now he can't even get Insured due to extortionate Insurance premiums. Does Anyone have any suggestions as to how this situation could be handled more fairly ? The whole thing has been a complete nightmare and we still haven't got a conviction.

I'm sorry your son has gone through all of this, but as far as the insurance company are concerned, all of that is irrelevant, they just are concerned about there being numerous claims over a relatively short period of time.

RedHelenB · 20/09/2018 17:49

He's young, and been involved in 2 accidents so sadly that doesn't surprise me. Sounds like he's going through a terrible time so I would definitely move asap somewhere with public transport. Is he a witness for the stabbing?

sprinklesandsauce · 20/09/2018 17:52

I agree with cheesy, I am sorry that he has had to go through all of this, but the insurance company are doing their job. Their job is to assess risk and he is a high risk due to all the repeat claims. It is not their concern whose fault it is.

I hope that you are successful with your move and that you and your grandson can find somewhere better to live and cut all ties with these people. Hopefully somewhere with public transport, so he can get to work.

Car insurance is a fucking swindle that's why. You have my sympathies. My parked car was hit by a drunk driver - we had a witness and police breathalysed them. I still got stung.

Insurance is risk based and unfortunately your grandson poses an incredibly high risk of being involved in another incident. This will also be coupled with other drivers his age also (potentially) being less responsible drivers

It does seem unfair doesn’t it? It’s one of the reasons I don’t pursue claims for minor accidents (car hit while parked on road, broken into etc) - even though it isn’t your fault the premium goes up. Even accidents when other cars have hit me (articulated lorry went into the back of me at traffic lights), have still affected my premiums.

StatisticallyChallenged · 20/09/2018 22:52

He's had (at least) two presumably pretty large claims since the start of the year - from the insurance company's point of view he's a very high risk. I'm not surprised his insurance premium has skyrocketed tbh.

The crimes against him aren't his fault, but it doesn't change the reality that he's far more likely to make another claim in the future.

Make sure you’re a named driver too, usually reduces cost (don’t ‘front’ it and insure in your name, ins co’s are hot at spotting that nowadays)

Sorry to hear things are so difficult for you.

"Fault" in motor insurance doesn't mean what it means in everyday use. To a car insurer what counts is who has to pay. Your grandson's first collision would have been non-fault (assuming the other driver had valid insurance), but the second (reversing) and third (vandalism) incidents will be considered at-fault for him unless and until insurers are able to reclaim the money from somebody else.

An 18-year-old with three claims, two of them at-fault, in a year is unsurprisingly going to be priced off the road.

But really this is peripheral. Your grandson needs support to get out of and away from this violent gang culture. Before he gets killed.
