To not tell them about my actual dates (again)?

Lilsquish · 20/09/2018 09:56

Im currently 7+6 weeks pregnant. However according to my lmp im 10 weeks.

I told the midwife my cycles are always 40+ days and that i used opks so know exactly when i ovulated (hence knowing im further behind)

midwife said she would amend my notes.

today i have received my 12 week scan date. i'll be 9+6 when i get it.

ideally i don't want to tell them (again) as id love an early scan (have had a previous mc) but then i know theyll have to give me a second scan approx 2 weeks later as il be too early for all the measurements that they need to do.

so AIBU to just go for the scan and get an early glimpse of my baby/ reassurance everything is ok even though it will waste nhs time/money?

Both my pregnancies I knew the dates were wrong and told midwives I have long cycles. They told me they always go on LMP. The sonographer asked me if I thought the dates were wrong at the scan as the baby obviously didn't look 12 weeks. I was about 9 weeks each time, watching a little blob waving their stumpy arms around Smile

CaptainCorrigan · 21/09/2018 06:27

Just take the scan! They go on LMP as standard, but hence the dating scan as it's not always accurate. They'll be able to give you an accurate due date anyway. I hadn't had a period in months, they still took mine anyway which made me on paper 26 weeks, I wasn't I was 9 weeks but they correct it after.

PrivateDoor · 21/09/2018 06:30

I am a mw who does booking scans. The 12 week thing is a myth, we do booking scans from 9 weeks so it may well not need repeated - we only repeat them if there is concern that baby is much smaller than expected. So it depends on what they think about that when they scan.

I would definitely go ahead with the appointment that you have been allocated.

Heatherjayne1972 · 21/09/2018 06:39

It’s actually really rude that they just won’t accept that we know our bodies
I had the same run in with the midwife - apparently all women have a. 28 day cycle!

Cookit · 21/09/2018 06:45

In my first one I was temping and I made up my period dates to fit ovulation. Now I can’t be bothered and just let them get it wrong....

GetOnYerBike · 21/09/2018 06:58

I bled a lot during pregnancy and ended up at the early pregnancy unit.

I had an internal scan at 6+3 and then bled very heavily the next week so they scanned me externally (bleeding) and I was 7+5 they dated me from that scan.

I didn't have a 12 week scan just straight onto a 20 week scan. Looking back I should have insisted on another one or paid for one at 12 weeks but he was my 2nd child, I was a sahm with no local support.

Just be aware they may not offer you a 12 week scan at all. Be prepared to pay for it.

My dates were out, I have endometriosis and my periods are very irregular, I know exactly when I conceived as I did ovulation tests. They still went off my measured baby dates.

TheCatFromOuterSpace · 21/09/2018 07:05

I would take the scan, you tried to tell them but they wouldn't listen.

I lied about the date of my last period, and made up a date which was two weeks before I ovulated.

Lilsquish · 21/09/2018 09:28

are you in the UK Jengnr? really surprised they never rescanned you when you were only 6 weeks.

I’m surprised about this too. I already have a early scan and a 12 week booked on NHS.
Last time I had my 12 week at 11 week and they re-did it because although they could get the measurements ok they wanted to re do at a better angle and because I was 11 only they thought they had plenty of time.
Also know a friend was dated a week or two earlier, only 10 or so, so they re-did 12 week scan a few weeks later.

nutellanom · 21/09/2018 09:52

They can date it earlier than 12 weeks but won't be able to complete the downs screening etc unless you are at least 11 weeks - that would be the reason you would be asked to return (which would be fine).

Wispaismyfave · 21/09/2018 10:04

I told them my last period date at the booking appointment but also said I thought it'd be out and explained why. They still went off last period date and I was nearly 3 weeks behind at the scan. Although they dated the pregnancy I had to go for another scan as they can't do all the measurements. I'd just go to the earlier scan as annoying as it is having to take time off work twice.

HidingFromMyKids · 21/09/2018 10:06

In my trust you opt in for the nuchal screening. If you do they need to measure when the baby is between 11+2 and 13+6 for it to be accurate. This is why you may need to rebook a dating scan. If it's not offered or you don't opt in the dating scan is usually acceptable between 8 and 14 weeks.

This pregnancy I was only just within the dates at 11+2 so I booked a private around 13 weeks for piece of mind.

BlingLoving · 21/09/2018 10:11

Definitely go as others have said. even if the MW does believe you, they would probably still insist on doing scans by the date because there ARE cases where the women's information is wrong.

eg, in my case, confirmed PCOS, fertility treatment with DC1. Unexpectedly (and happily) pregnant with DC2. by dates, I was 11 and a half weeks when I discovered the pregnancy and was rushed for a scan the following week. Doctor and I both knew the chances that I was that pregnant were extremely low, but her view was that we do it by the book, get a proper dating scan and then rebook the 12 week scan once that's confirmed.

Incidentally, I thought I was 5 weeks at that point. But the scan showed I was over 9 weeks! So we do also make mistakes.

HypoCali · 21/09/2018 10:14

Have the scan and enjoy seeing your little bean.

I have long cycles and ovulated on cd29 with my pregnancy, I just told them the LMP date was 2 weeks before the ovulation date because I knew anything else would not compute!

53rdWay · 21/09/2018 10:17

Yes we can make mistakes, but it’s still frustrating when they go off LMP rather than ovulation date. The whole point of going from LMP is that women generally don’t know when they’ve ovulated but do know when their last period was, so you can guess at ovulation date from that. But when you actually do know when you ovulated it seems daft to be told “doesn’t matter, we insist on going by LMP anyway.”

Lilsquish · 21/09/2018 11:07

@wispa i work shifts so thankfully the date of the scan has fallen when im off (well im nightshift)

thought id give a wee update. so.i had my scan on thu and as i thought i was 9+6 so have to go back again in 2 weeks.

the mw was quite short with me about it, despite me telling her that id informed them that i was earlier than my lmp indicated.

i dont think she believed me.

oh well, i got to see my precious baby and everything looking good so far x
