To ask how you dry your laundry in the winter?

I seem to do washing every day - there are only 4 or us that seems too much.

Any way - although I do have a tumble dryer I’m reluctant to use it because it’s quite expensive- so just in ‘emergencies’.

But I don’t really like washing on the radiators all over the house - just doesn’t look nice.

I currently have a de-humidifier plugged in and 2 clothes airers set up.

But they take up so much room and because I wash every day - they are in constant use so a bit of an eye sore.

How do I overcome my laundry challenge?

specialsubject · 19/09/2018 16:39

no, outside the playground it doesnt work like that even for queen bees.

science - true even if you are too foolish to understand. Sorry if that annoys you but welcome to the big scary world.

Life is too short to hang washing

I love seeing my clean washing flapping about whenever I can (yes I'm sad but heyho) even in winter if it's not pouring down. I actually miss seeing a line full of nappies 😳😀

I say that as a student Mum of 2 who also works 2 jobs so time is definitely a luxury here!

CherryPavlova · 19/09/2018 17:24

Either in the dryer or hanging on a Sheila Maid above the Aga.

Magicroundabout321 · 19/09/2018 17:24

Anyone tried these? We are considering getting one:

I hang clothes on the airers in the spare room - or anywhere where there is a space if all the rooms are occupied - overnight. Shirts/tops etc. go on hangers and hang in the doorways to get plenty of air circulating. I get up first, so I take all the laundry off the hangers and airers, and then give it ten minutes in the dryer to finish it off. It's a rare item that doesn't dry perfectly overnight, and the dryer knocks out the creases - no ironing! Simples!

thesockgap · 19/09/2018 17:44

We don't have a tumble drier for many reasons, including no space, too expensive to run, and I don't like the way clothes feel after they have been tumble dried. We do occasionally go and use one in the launderette for bedding only, during the winter months when it wouldn't be able to dry on the line. Everything else goes on maidens which we keep up in the loft room, or on the line if the weather is good. There are 5 of us here and we do an average of 2 washes a day, so it's not like we don't have much washing. It's just there are ways and means to dry it, without having to use a drier.

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 19/09/2018 17:52

With fire! We have two stoves, one in the dining room and one in the living room. We only use the dining room for sunday lunch so the washing sits in there in front of the stove. Doesn't take very long at all to dry.

thewrinklefairy · 19/09/2018 17:55

I use a rotary line all year that you can wind up to higher than most, after you have loaded it - so it catches any breeze going - i would recommend.
Otherwise large airer.
I have a tumble dryer but only use it for sheets in winter - it is not free, wrecks good clothes and not environmentally friendly.
We are a family of 6.

PanannyPanoo · 19/09/2018 17:58

www.rotaire.com/

Anyone use one of these? I am currently contemplating!

Annette69 · 19/09/2018 18:03

I put towels, bedding, underwear, sports kits in the dryer but never put clothes in it as I find it shrinks stuff. I have an airer in the bathroom upstairs which I put in the bath and an airing cupboard.

ArcadePixie · 19/09/2018 18:08

Tumble dryer all year round as I can’t be arsed hanging it out. Cheap to run anyway

AL75 · 19/09/2018 18:10

As well as the heated airer, I also have a special cover over it which makes the clothes dry in half the time!

lifebeginsat16 · 19/09/2018 18:10

You can buy very decent recon ones from Lakeland on Ebay. Mine's indispensible and it folds away.

CrisisCrunchie · 19/09/2018 18:17

Afraid I’m lazy on this one & always use my tumble drier

Elementtree · 19/09/2018 18:17

Anything robust goes in the dryer. Anything else goes over the clothes airer - or over the radiator if everything needs to move quicker.

Zzzexhaustedzzz · 19/09/2018 18:18

Well, this has been one of the most irritating housekeeping problems in my 19 years of experience. As a mother of 3 teens it’s quite a bulk of laundry I now do. Why we haven’t yet designed a better way of dealing with wet washing I do not know! Do new homes have a sensible and environmentally friendly solution built in? Not that I know of! From April- September I hang it outside mostly. The rest of the year I pop to the launderette (nearby!! Phew!!) once a week and hang it around the house, causing condensation.
Maybe if we had more female inventors and architects? Because I am willing to bet that way over 50% of laundry is done by women!

nowifi · 19/09/2018 18:20

I go to the launderette too. Used to enjoy it on my own with a newspaper quite relaxing! Now have to take DD with me it's more hassle than anything!

AllTakenSoRubbishUsername · 19/09/2018 18:24

Tumble drier for everything TD-able and then a drying rack in the laundry room for anything else. It gets toasty warm in there with the radiator so it works really well, not for everything though - definitely couldn't be without the drier!

noeffingidea · 19/09/2018 18:26

Hang it outside if it's not raining, snowy or damp in the air. Even if it only dries a little bit I still like the freshness you get from line drying. Indoors it goes on my clothes airer or on hangers on over door hooks.

speakout · 19/09/2018 18:30

Outside mostly- even on a frosty day clothes will dry quite a bit if there is a wind or sun.

I am at home all day so I can keep an eye on it

speakout · 19/09/2018 18:30

noeffingidea

Same here.

Littlefeather · 19/09/2018 18:37

One of these over the stairs if you have room? www.castinstyle.co.uk/product.php/285/traditional-kitchen-maid-pulley-clothes-airer/9e15d162e019d5e5695b89e292c0af53?gclid=CjwKCAjw54fdBRBbEiwAW28S9hRY3Rx0Y6Nm8NjFbsE9cWWg_i5-0Ah3I46I_sQwinRvZWe9IZikmhoC48QQAvD_BwE

It’s the warmest place in house if you have heating on so might as well make use of the warmth you’ve already paid for!

Hadsuchahardday · 19/09/2018 18:53

Over the bath airer, plus a tall airer that I put in the shower cubicle, shirts etc on hangers on the shower rail. Door shut and window open wide. Bedding dries over the bannister.

QueenCity · 19/09/2018 18:56

The same way as in the summer-it all goes in the dryer. We're not allowed to hang washing out where I live.
