When did you start giving cows milk? My mother thinks 6 months but mother in law says 3. Both went back to work when kids were 3 months.

My mum said I went onto cow's milk at 3 months (70s)

Camomila · 17/09/2018 18:30

My mum switched from bf to cows milk with me at 6m (when I started biting!)
DBro was ff and I don't know if she did it for 6m or a year (he was born later)

ambereeree · 17/09/2018 18:35

My mil bf her youngest for 1 months but others were formula from birth . Then cows milk.

My mum says I went onto cows milk at 6 months plus some kind of powdered baby food Confused sounds appetising!

Also stuff like spaghetti hoops that you'd never give a baby today :o it's how they found out I have my grandma's cheese intolerance.

BertieBotts · 17/09/2018 18:40

This was late 80s btw.

My sister was a 90s baby and the same. But I think my half siblings, born in 00s, were 12 months.

ambereeree · 17/09/2018 18:42

With parents from a different country spaghetti hoops were a treat for me!

One baby 80s and one in the 90s. They had cow's milk from 6 months.

Cornishclio · 17/09/2018 18:42

I had my children in the 80s. They had cows milk from 6 months and started weaning at 4 months.

agnurse · 17/09/2018 18:47

I can't speak to the 80s as I was a child then.

BUT:

Child should not be given straight cow's milk before age 1. Cheese and yogurt are okay after about 6 months. Cow's milk formula is okay from birth. Straight cow's milk can cause bleeding in the GI tract which can cause anemia.

scarbados · 17/09/2018 18:48

6m when I stopped bf because I developed an aversion to having chewed nipples.

She was another spaghetti hoops baby (1978) plus mashed potato with cheese, pureed fruit and veg and a few Gerber meals from jars.

BertieBotts · 17/09/2018 18:52

I think most people know it's not recommended any more. It was just an interesting thread about trends in the past?

FinnegansWhiskers · 17/09/2018 18:53

Full fat cows milk from 6 months. Weaning from 3 months.

couchparsnip · 17/09/2018 19:05

My brothers are twins born in 70s and DM couldn't bf then. One was in hospital and the other at home (no way they would separate them now!). Anyway she was advised to feed them on tins of evaporated milk! They are both fine now but can you imagine!!

couchparsnip · 17/09/2018 19:08

I an pretty sure it was diluted and had sugar added.

Hushnownobodycares · 17/09/2018 19:11

Early 90's babies here. I think the advice was to wait until 6 months, definitely not 3m although we were apparently OK to start weaning then. We left the dc until 9 months and filled in with what was then called Follow On milk. Don't know if that's still a thing but they all guzzled both equally happily.

ivykaty44 · 17/09/2018 19:13

6 months for 1992 & used that same advice in 1998

Earslaps · 17/09/2018 19:14

I was born in 1979 and DM said the advice was to move onto cow's milk at nine months. So she bf until 6 months, then used formula until nine months.

lljkk · 17/09/2018 19:16

My friend's Bounty book (1975) recommened 6months iirc.

redshoeblueshoe · 17/09/2018 19:18

I had my DC's in the 80's. Bf for about 6 months, then ff. I took a years maternity leave.

My baby brother was born in 89 and he had cows milk (BF until a year) after 1 yearish
My DD born 1992 ( BF till 1 year) cows milk after she finished BF fromm10 months as she stared weening I had a older baby formula I gave her when making up baby porridge etc

Don't forget back then we weren't told not to eat blue cheese fresh mayo etc etc.

minniemummy0 · 17/09/2018 20:46

Evaporated milk formulas are actually still used by some people! And apparently are not ideal but sort of ok, as long as they have an iron and vitamin C supplement. Biggest risk is for dehydration. It’s mixed with water and sugar as a particular ratio. (I’m not recommending this by the way, there are much better formulas available however it was better than your baby dying if you couldn’t breastfeed/didn’t have a wet nurse available). Carnation milk used to make baby care booklets for new mothers!!! Confused

QueenoftheNights · 17/09/2018 21:44

the advice in the late 1980s was wean at 6 months and keep to breast feeding if possible to 6 months.
I'm a bit confused by some posters here because they seem to think it's if THEY were born in the 70s and 80s rather than becoming mums in those decades.

QueenoftheNights · 17/09/2018 21:46

minniemummy0 I think you are in the wrong era with that. My Dcs were born in the 80s.
The evap milk etc was a 50s thing (when I was a baby.) no way was it for babies who are now 30 yr old adults.

goose1964 · 17/09/2018 21:53

I had my eldest in the late 80s , as far as I can remember weaning started at 3 months and cow's milk was 6 months, but I've had 2 more children and 4 grandchildren since then so I've been through so many different "rules"
