Due to have DS number 2 in few weeks, DS number 1 is 5 yo.

I've kept pretty much all his stuff, except bought new crib, clothes, blankets ect.

I mentioned to friend that I was washing all ds1 old clothes for baby arriving, they're all in great nic, smell little musty but will wash couple times.

Well they said they wouldn't do that, they'd buy all new, just in case??

Am I BU??

Just in case of what?

BakerBear · 16/09/2018 17:19

No its very very common to save things for a sibling.

I didnt.

Very costly mistake!

masktaster · 16/09/2018 17:20

Yanbu

In case of what, exactly? I'm saving all of DS's clothes for number 2, if that ever happens. And a lot of those came from the charity shop anyway...

Disfordarkchocolate · 16/09/2018 17:21

I would be happy with washing them. They will be totally fine to wear and will save you a fortune.

BarryTheKestrel · 16/09/2018 17:21

I'm due DS in a few weeks and other than the dresses and bright pink stuff, he's got all of DDs hand me downs. They've all been washed and are good to go.

I have topped up the clothes, but also had a lot of boy clothes hand me downs from my cousin. Only thing I have bought new specifically is a mattress and bottles.

There is absolutely no need to buy new when you have saved from a previous child. What a waste of money.

Crabbitstick · 16/09/2018 17:22

I've just done same thing. Why would you buy a whole set of new clothes Confused

ArtemisWeatherwax · 16/09/2018 17:23

My youngest is 7, DH has had a vasectomy and I still have a pot of my favourite baby clothes just in case Grin Why ever wouldn't you keep them?

KindergartenKop · 16/09/2018 17:24

My ds2 wears the clothes of ds1 and kid down the street. He's survived this.

Treaclepie19 · 16/09/2018 17:25

It could be a bit of an OCD worry (as I suffer too) but there's no actual reason for it.
We have all DS's clothes in the loft and I plan to just take them down and wash them.

FullOfNothing · 16/09/2018 17:25

You sound very sensible and your friend sounds very wasteful.

Babybearsporij · 16/09/2018 17:25

Your friend is BU. Everyone I know keeps / has kept stuff or had hand me downs. Some of the clothes DC2 is wearing are on their 4th or 5th child!! You'd be mad not to.

yikesanotherbooboo · 16/09/2018 17:25

This is like the threads where people keep buying new School uniform!
Of course you wash and reuse. Babies don't wear clothes out as they grow so fast. They won't spot the odd stain, fading, fashion or gender.
Your friend is silky wand wasteful.

Subtlecheese · 16/09/2018 17:26

Completely fine. I am also wondering "in case of what" some people really believe microbe free is achievable, don't they. Don't let that person's neurosis affect you!

PolkerrisBeach · 16/09/2018 17:28

Hugely wasteful. No wonder landfill is filling at such a rate of knots.

Merryoldgoat · 16/09/2018 17:30

Some of the clothes my baby wears are being used for the 4th time - he’s coping well in the face of this obvious challenge.

laura6032 · 16/09/2018 17:31

Thank you, I'm not entirely sure 'in case' she didn't elaborate 😂.

I hate waste so will be quite happy to use ds1s. Thank you guys x

We did the same, same age Gap and we have saved so much I have been able to buy a few really lovely bits for ds2.
No way I would be throwing out all ds1 lovely clothes and buying new for the sake of it. I guess if you bought cheap clothes in the first place it would not matter.

CarlGrimesMissingEye · 16/09/2018 17:37

Most of the clothes my two wore have been handed down again and are now on the 3rd/4th/5th child wearing them. Perfectly normal.

Chocolala · 16/09/2018 17:39

Every time DD1 grew out of things, I put them in. Box labelled with the age they were for, and stored them in the attic. Dd2 has never needed anything new.

And I’m still doing it. The box of ‘6 years old’ just went up, and in a couple of years will be useful again!

Oysterbabe · 16/09/2018 17:40

DS wears loads of his older sister's stuff.

Chocolala · 16/09/2018 17:40

And when dd2 grows out of things, I try to pass them on to others, or to charity.

Korvalscat · 16/09/2018 17:54

Dd donated her ds's baby clothes to the charity shop 3 months before she became pregnant with ds2. She really regretted that bit of decluttering. Ds1's clothes that are still in good condition and are now being stored for ds2.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 16/09/2018 19:20

Your friend is correct: boys from babyhood and up to the age of 5 (and beyond) famously care greatly about what they wear and will be bitterly disappointed to be dressed in clothes that they don't even know have already been worn by an older sibling Grin

laura6032 · 16/09/2018 20:17

Webuiltthisbuffett...

I think you've cracked it 😂 what am I thinking x

No way YANBU! It's sensible and cost effective, my dd is 8 weeks she is currently asleep in one of her brothers baby grows, she wears all his vests under her outfits it's bonkers to buy all new, me and my friends have a bag that we all pass onto each other with clothes and maternity/ nursing wear, we just add to it when we are done and give it to the next person when needed
