AIBU to think that no-one ever actually uses the fancy attachments for food processors?!

I've been unpacking my kitchen following having my kitchen done and discovered an array of posh looking attachments for my food processor which I have never used or even looked at since I got it. Does any one ever actually use them? That is the attachments other than the standard grating/slicing, dicing and kneading attachments.

I'm faced with the option of shoving them to the back of one of my new units knowing full well they'll stay there untouched for the next 10 years, throwing them away or learning what to do with them!

My DH has used the onion dicing one twice I think and that's just because a particular recipe demanded a stupid amount of onion.

Other than that they are a waste of space.

AuntieGeek · 16/09/2018 15:51

Happily rediscovering all of my attachments. I'm using lots for food prep (have a not that irrational fear of graters and mandolins)

Kneading attachments for a food processor? What's your machine?

I have a Kenwood Multi-One and the kneading blade works in the bowl, as per a Chef. The machine has a second drive on the top where all the food processor bits and other attachments fit on. I've had the thing a year and am still finding out what I can use all the attachments for.

It sounds like the manual has gone walkabout, which mine always do, so maybe have a look at the manufacturer's website to see if they have a downloadable manual for your machine? It might give you some ideas. :-)

PapaLazarousWife · 17/09/2018 10:18

My manual has definately gone walk about. When I say kneading attachment I mean the one that's exactly like the blade that goes inside but not a blade - it's just plastic. Maybe I should have called it the mixing thingamajig!

Figural - I think I will take your advice and download the manual and then give myself a month and if I don't use any of the bits then have a clear out. Grin

Sorry for the utterly boring AIBU!

Bin them. I've just bought a replacement food processor, after my faithful Kenwood died on me after 23 years. I knew full well that all I needed was something basic with a powerful motor - just a blender, sharp blade and grating/slicing discs. Anything else just takes up valuable space in the kitchen.

You're right, that is a kneading blade!! I'd forgotten my late food processor had one too. I lost it because I never used it. I preferred my old Kenwood Chefette, the really old one with the rectangular-shaped liquidiser that fitted on the back end of the mixer. It did everything I wanted in those years, alongside an ancient Moulinex machine for food processor stuff.

The Moulinex looked like a mincer and the grating and slicing bits were conical things that fit into the front of it. Those were the days. I love the kit I have now, it's really helpful, but does take up a lot more cupboard and worktop space.

theycallmebabydriver · 17/09/2018 11:22

I was thinking this the other day when I was clearing some cupboards out. See also hoover attachments. I opened a cupboard to find about 8 attachments for the dyson that have never been used and I have no idea what they are actually for!

Your right op why I have a decent hand blender dh insisted on getting a FP and we rarely use it Hmm

Hillarious · 17/09/2018 12:10

You have to have a food processor out and plugged in permanently, otherwise it doesn't get used half as much as it might.

violetbunny · 17/09/2018 12:31

I often use the grating attachment for mine. It makes homemade coleslaw a breeze.

A580Hojas · 17/09/2018 12:35

I only use my food processor to make breadcrumbs Grin.

Lweji · 17/09/2018 12:41

I mostly use mine for hummus. I put everything in and then mix.

Also burger and meat roll mixtures.

For the rest it's basically more trouble cleaning than the time it takes to cut the veg.

ShotsFired · 17/09/2018 12:46

I have a Lidl FP and I use the grater and blade tons. Am worried the blade will break eventually!

But there is a different attachment I don't even know what it is for and I can't see any pics of similar things on google - its like a sort of flared plastic cone. So it sits over the central spindle and then does...what?

explodingid · 17/09/2018 12:47

I have had my Magimix for 18 years and not used the attachments once. May let them go now. I have recently bought a hand blender so the processer will get used rarely now.

serbska · 17/09/2018 13:51

Love my FP!

Use the chopping and grating blades ALL the time. FP is plugged in and out with the chopping blades usually in and the other attachments handy anyway.

Occasionally I have used the plastic blades for pastry. Very very occasionally I have used the disc thing to whisk cream.

RhiWrites · 17/09/2018 13:59

I found mine the other day too! I wish I knew what they were for. Would someone care to shed some light on these?

Scotinoz · 17/09/2018 14:18

I have a Kenwood mixer and use a some of the attachments; whisk, beater and dough hook are regulars, as are the blender and food processor (with the standard blade). Occasionally I crack out the slicing/grating blades. I used the grinding mill attachment for the first time since buying it 8 years ago recently. The mincer and juicer remain unused...

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 17/09/2018 14:24

I use all of mine but then I am able to firstly have it on the worktop permanently plugged in and secondly have a drawer for the attachments just underneath.

It's a bit like all those obscure sewing machine feet that come with an old Singer. I looked all mine up once and discovered one was a ruffling foot. I have never come close to needing a ruffling foot.

That's for juicing citrus fruits. You cut the fruit in half and hold it against the cone and turn the machine on. I used to use mine for squeezing fresh orange juice each morning, so five oranges took less than 2 minutes and there's nothing nicer than freshly squeezed orange juice in the summer. I lost it one day unfortunately and still miss it.
