I eat three takeaways a week...

Mid 30s. No children. I live with My DP.

I have a stressful job with a lot of responsibility, i work 9 to 5 but I’m exhausted when I finish and just don’t want to cook. I cycle to and from work (20 mile round trip) and run 3 times a week.

This came up just now in conversation and my friend was just shocked and I’d go as far as to say appalled.

IABU?

(The takeaways are usually dim sum/Thai food)

Whatever works. You can solve the same problem with a slow cooker, batch cooking, a stack of ready meals in the freezer (Cook is good, as PP said), a few "easy meals" (egg on toast etc) a week... but takeaways don't have to mean greasy/oily/unhealthy.

MorningsEleven · 15/09/2018 21:50

I'm well jealous.

EssentialHummus · 15/09/2018 21:51

(And FWIW dim sum imo is among the more expensive takeaway options, and you can buy gyoza etc for the freezer that cook in literally 5 minutes - will be ready by the time you've undressed and had a wee, if you are looking for another option.)

Bimgy85 · 15/09/2018 21:52

No yanbu if it's reasonably normal type of takeaway. It's just the term takeaway that shocks people.

You need to eat your dinner and if that just so happens to be a meat and veg curry from the local Thai takeaway then so what, providing it's not pumped with shit that is

But from reasonably healthy takeaways yeah yanbu

Cherrysherbet · 15/09/2018 21:53

I hate takeaways. I don't see the appeal. YABU

Milliepatch · 15/09/2018 22:06

I do too OP Blush! Mainly due to same reasons of stressful job that sees me do long hours plus only cooking for myself half the time works out cheaper!

Ceeeeeelia · 15/09/2018 22:06

Are you really that exhausted working 9-5? It's hardly long hours.

Eat takeaways if you want, but I'd be wondering whether bad health was making me tired, and of diet was part of it.

TomHardysNextWife · 15/09/2018 22:11

I'd be pretty shocked too. That's so bad for your health OP. It's the long term damage all that salt and fat is doing inside that would worry me.

Making your own stir fry takes less than 10 minutes and you know what you're eating.

IWishIHadEvenMorePlasticTat · 15/09/2018 22:14

I saw the title and was like ‘how the fuck do you afford it?!’ But then I read you had no kids and then I thought, ‘Fair play, crack on’.

Ethylred · 15/09/2018 22:20

How many heart attacks will it take to stop you?

IWishIHadEvenMorePlasticTat · 15/09/2018 22:22

It does seem a bit excessive though OP. Like a bad habit that you’ve fallen into.

I’m guessing with all the exercise you do that it’s not affecting your health or waistline yet?

Cheddarsmedders · 15/09/2018 23:02

Sorry all! I got engrossed in a film!

Ah, went away and came back to 2 pages so I can’t answer specific posts but will answer general.

Yes, I suppose it is more restaurant then take away in the sense that I don’t eat pizza, burgers etc and yes it is deliveroo. But I’m under no illusion that Dim Sum is particularly healthy. I wish it was, what a world it would be.

Not a stealth boast about living near take outs but it’s london so I guess that is one of the plus points. On the downside I saw a man knock somebody’s laptop bag on to the floor and kick it to one side trying to get off the tube last week Grin

I’m a size 10 and healthy BMI but in terms of health I guess I should be considering the
Salt levels at the very least!

GREAT idea from PP about those home delivery Hello fresh type things! I’m seriously going to look at that

In terms of my 9-5 job. No, I get that it’s probably less than a lot of people work. Maybe I am exercising too much. There’s other sports that I do on a more ad hoc basis but written down it now seems a lot.

OP I was joking about the stealth boast Grin

My fault for not checking before we bought this house and it means I either cook or have toast Grin

Floaty2018 · 15/09/2018 23:09

In the least judgey way, let me tell you a story about a family member.

Massive exercise enthusiast ( gym 6 times a week, ran 13 full marathons, played competitive football and cricket), in the best shape a 50 year old man could be. Also he has never smoked or drunk alcohol. Despite his exercise habits, he would eat out several times a week (making seemingly healthy choices). He did this for almost 30 years he says.

Earlier this year, he was rushed to hospital and had to have an emergency triple heart bypass. The statement made to him by the surgeon was " You cannot out exercise a bad diet".

Please take heed, for your future self.

Blameanamechange · 15/09/2018 23:09

Salt intake and batch cook for freezer. That's it.

Aquamarine1029 · 15/09/2018 23:19

My first thought is that if your lifestyle changes in regards to exercise, due to injury, whatever, you might be in very big trouble. You could start piling on the pounds at a rate that will shock you. The sodium and fat levels are another thing to consider no matter how much you weigh.

Start cooking at home. It will save you a fortune and it's easy when you plan it out. Get an Instant Pot, too!

Aus84 · 15/09/2018 23:33

As much as I wish I could do that OP, this is one of the reasons why heart disease is the biggest killer. No matter how much you exercise, no matter how slim you are- your arteries could be becoming slowly blocked by the salt and fat content of your chosen takeaways.
