I have a safe...but this thread reminded me of when the kids were young and I had "emergency" chocolate...wherever I hid it DS found it. Even when I put it in the First Aid Kit...so I put it in my knicker drawer I knew he would never eat it once it have been in there!!!

caoraich · 15/09/2018 20:49

Sparklingbrook I'm glad there's someone else. It's never occurred to me to stash cash anywhere. Are we going wrong somewhere?

I have a bowl of "emergency change" that is probably around £20. I recently had to dust it.

I do have a couple of emergency credit cards that I don't ever use. The theory being that e.g. if I was mugged, my bag with keys, usual cards etc gone, then I could still pay a locksmith once they'd got me back into my house.

MyGranWasAManageress · 15/09/2018 20:51

I have a £5 in the back of my phone case. I do also have a collection of out of date £1s and I even found an old £10 note recently. Oh and a jar of 1, 2, 5, 10 & 20p coins.

There's usually cash in the safe but that's business money.

Ginkypig · 15/09/2018 20:51

The freezer is not really a good place though, it's such a well known "secret stash place" that it's been shown in movies (like coyote ugly for example)

Iv got no particular better suggestions to be honest!

GirlFliesHome · 15/09/2018 20:52

I have a bank account that only I can access (although DH knows about it). He is a fritterer. I put in bits and bobs and it all adds up (3 days at Centreparcs last year!).

We have cash lying around for emergencies.... when I think about it I put a tenner in a coat pocket, my bedside drawer etc. Last time we counted it up we had nearly£600!!!!! It's for unexpecteds... atms going down (not uncommon!) and also subbing the cleaner who was short one week an could not wait for a bank transfer. It comes in handy every now and then.

ILoveAllRainbows · 15/09/2018 20:57

I always have around £100 in cash for taxis etc in an emergency. I don't hide it - I just keep it in the sideboard as I if I am burgled as I don't want the burglar to go through everything looking for it.

I am more concerned that I do not have any jewellery at all and so a burglar would upset all my belongings looking for something that I don't have.

HumanParaquat · 15/09/2018 21:03

When we bought our current house, the previous owner (an elderly chap) had kindly left us around £300 stashed in curtain linings. Found one stash by chance, then checked all the others before we threw them out .

Up to around £200 I'd just keep in my purse, or pop some in a mug in the cupboard if I didn't want to carry it. Never really have a stash on purpose though.

londonrach · 15/09/2018 21:14

I think i have 2p in a spare purse in a bag...thats it.

I have cash stashed all over my house, I get it from my nana, the habit, not the cash, when she passed away we found thousands, circa 30k in shoes, boots, winter coat pockets, old cigarette packets hidden in the airing cupboard with £500 in, she didn't trust the banks!!!

Flooffloof · 15/09/2018 21:23

I had an emergency vet visit a while ago, knew it was going to be a lot and found about £600 rummaging around the house. Did not expect to find so much at all. Was stunned but his change jar had best part of 50quid and mine had close to a hundred. Plus £80 or thereabouts actually in a savings book that hadn't made it to bank and birthday money. Although not nearly enough to pay the whole vet Bill, it was a serious chunk.

CantankerousCamel · 15/09/2018 21:23

I’ve just started a super secret Christmas stash! I’m actually enjoying saving.

I will continue afterward and have a holiday stash

CatLadyToddlerMother · 15/09/2018 21:32

Just remembered I do have some jewelry as well, worth quite a lot of money. Probably should move that.

GirlFliesHome · 15/09/2018 21:32

Holiday stashes are the best, Cantankerous.

I just whittle away at mine. So I have a dd on pay day that creams off a bit that I don't even miss (you learn to adapt quickly). Then, if I would have had a cappucino, but take in a thermos instead I ut in £2.80. Ditto for a bought sandwich etc.

I've been really focusing this year on building it up, and we should have enough to have a family trip at Christmas...... 4 days away in a nice hotel, a bit of tobogganing.

RedneckStumpy · 15/09/2018 21:42

We have $2000 in cash, it’s buried in the garden, and another $2000 buried in the garden of our second property.

Fluffyears · 15/09/2018 22:03

My gran had s three seater sofa and two archaits and she put ears of cash into the cushions she would zip her cash inside. She also had a Cartier bag in the wardrobe filled with cash. She had s fortune stashed around as the man in the bank told her to stop depositing money as he was trying to ‘hide’ it in the event of her going into a home. She rarely spent money, her coal was free, she had tons of clothes, she lived well but frugally.

picklepost · 15/09/2018 22:11

The only cash in our house is for when younger ones want to buy lunch.
Older one uses debit card
No need for cash at any other time.

Taxi? = uber
Tradies? = screenshot of online transaction
Takeaway? - online

Etc

curlykaren · 15/09/2018 22:19

I had £3000 somewhere. I can't find it though. Have taken the whole house apart looking. Think it was taped to the inside of a piano I gave away 🙄

Ollivander84 · 15/09/2018 22:23

I found £200 I stashed in a box set. No idea what I put it there for. So that's a good place Grin

Mummybear80 · 15/09/2018 22:43

Really going to show my age here but I joined here when I was pregnant with my eldest who is now 17 so I'm a bit old and over the hill now...

I don't know how many people will remember a " popple teddy' I have kept one since my younger days Blush and it rolls into a wee ball, I've kept money in there for years and it's just shoved in a cupboard with all my other shite, I don't roll it into its ball position tho so it just looks like a random teddy in a cupboard full of crap...my brother is a sergeant in the police and thinks it's a
pretty crafty idea Grin
