Small school with almost zero careers advice.
So doing Maths, Physics and Geography Alevel plus Welsh Baculurate -Maths has been a slog but will.prpbably get a b through sheer effort - A/B for geography and physic
Got 4 As and 9 Bs at GCSE
He has no idea what he wants to do - has very good general knowledge and interested in lots of stuff - any suggestions of uni courses from his A levels as we need to start making some decisions.
I have suggested geology but have been told by a few people there are no jobs in it ?

I would focus less on immediate choices of uni and start looking at careers. Things like the prospects job profiles are brilliant. I always say to my students treat it like a pick n mix. Look at everything you can - even if it sounds random and write a list - What do you like and what don't you like? After doing this for a bit you'll get a scope of possible future careers from there work backwards.

Also look at apprenticeships as well. With those subjects he'll do well and they're amazing these days!! Seriously I get very jealous of the opportunities my students have lol

By do and don't like I mean within each job ie
I like that it's working outside
I don't like that it's working with kids

I like that there's lots to learn and grow in the role
I don't like that each day is the same

Etc

Civil Engineering? You need maths and physics.

bridgetreilly · 15/09/2018 18:35

Engineering.

Blessingsdragon1 · 15/09/2018 18:36

Thanks thats good advice x my oldest was very certain of his choices since almost primary so this is new territory

Would he have any interest in engineering? There are lots of different types - mechanical, civil (building bridges etc), chemical, aeronautical, systems, computer systems etc. It's a fairly safe bet if he wants a well-paid in demand job in the future.

Or any interest in computers? Again, there seem more opportunities with that than something like geology.

The UCAS website has some good starters as well for careers and which degree is right for me? Type stuff. I understand it's such a nightmare you just want to point them right but they have no clue where to start so that's why starting at the end and working backwards can be easier as it takes the pressure off

NainAGP · 15/09/2018 18:43

A good way to get to know the engineering possibilities is through Headstart, they do taster courses etc

curlykaren · 15/09/2018 18:43

There are definitely careers with a geology degree. Environmental scientist for any number of large agencies. Gas/oil is big business as is remedial planning for projects that are ending (think cleaning up old oil fields in Kuwait/contaminated land works). Lots of variety and fairly interesting too.

There's a tool which gives ideas as to degrees which people with various combinations of a levels commonly take university.which.co.uk/a-level-explorer/geography/mathematics/physics?o=120

Obviously he'd need to look at uni websites to find grade requirements but there are definitely engineering degrees with ABB type requirements including maths and physics.

I'm inferring he's starting yr 13 now, so probably too late for trying a head start course - definitely a good idea if anyone is reading who has DC a year or two younger in a similar position

If he is interested in a science degree get him to have a look at this post degree training programme (basically paid for three years to work and do a masters on the NHS Scientist Training Programme). You have to get a First or a 2:1 on a Pure or Applied science degree course.
