Refusing to buy certain cereals for my DC?

Ricekrispie22 · 15/09/2018 16:38

Does anyone else refuse to buy Coco Pops, Krave, Cookie Crisp and such like for their DC on the principle that 11g of sugar (more than a Freddo) for breakfast is just wrong?

OP posts:
LaurieMarlow · 17/09/2018 17:39

The defensiveness on here about food would blow your mind.

So not buying an expensive, highly processed, highly marketed foodstuff makes you a sanctimonious twat? Okaaay.

kaytee87 · 17/09/2018 17:43

They were referring to the “perfect parent” mob who sneer and deride anyone who gives anything they disagree with to their child.

Granted I haven't read every post on this thread but the only sneery ones I have seen are from people mocking those that don't buy sugary cereal 🤷🏼‍♀️

YeTalkShiteHen · 17/09/2018 17:44

kaytee87 I haven’t RTFT either, I was just explaining that it wasn’t aimed at people who don’t eat cereal because they don’t like it.

LeftRightCentre · 17/09/2018 17:55

I don't buy cereal of any sort usually FWIW because I think it's all shit, doesn't taste good and doesn't fill one up for long. But hey, the entire OP is about how some packaged cereals for breakfast is wrong.

Poppyinagreenfield · 17/09/2018 18:12

Haven’t been buying this junk for years. All you have to do is look at the contents. But it takes time an effort. Same problem with yoghurts.

At least with a bar of chocolate or a packet of crisps you know what you are buying.

Miyah · 17/09/2018 18:15

Cheerios aren’t that bad are they? I’m sure shreddies are more sugary.

kateandme · 17/09/2018 18:15

nope nothing better than craving a random bowl of cereal.or having cereal for tea.or just before bed in front of the best on tv.cereal is brilliant

kateandme · 17/09/2018 18:17

also perfectly healthy family who when kids all siblings would literally spoon after spoon white(yeh white!) sugar all over the cereal be it shreddies or knorflakes and then scooped all the cereal, sugared milk up at the end!yep yep.get the foook over all this food nonsense. no harm was done to us.we had balance in the rest of our meals.and ive never seen healthier sibling a few who have jobs in the fitness industry today.

pumpkinyael · 17/09/2018 18:18

DH has granola for breakfast... (Not something I'm into)

Buy the sugary one for Sunday breakfast?

Miyah · 17/09/2018 18:18

I was shocked at how much sugar is in kids snacks though.
Nearly 10g in an organix oat bar. Ditto a bear Yo-yo.
Also nearly 10g in one single little props pig fromage frais

Unihorn · 17/09/2018 18:19

@Poppyinagreenfield
Some of us have looked at the label and know what's in them but still to choose to eat them. I like "shit" cereal. I don't like porridge/muesli/overnight oats etc.

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 17/09/2018 18:20

I buy all these cereals. Everything in moderation and I'd rather they went to school on a bowl of coco pops than nothing at all.

WeMarchOn · 17/09/2018 18:21

If they were eating from a pyrex bowl I could understand but mine have a small ikea bowl of cheerios, you only live once right?

Wittow · 17/09/2018 18:37

I got conned into buying chocolate weetos and I allow them weekends only. My daughter loves going to a premier inn where she can have coco pops and a chocolate muffin. Day to day breakie I do a cinnamon and raisin bagel. I don't think it's good to start the day with too much sugar. I'd rather she ate scrambled egg but that ain't gonna happen...

ParisNext · 17/09/2018 18:39

No I would never buy them. I make a breakfast plate the night before which has ham, cheese, bread/butter, cucumber and a hard boiled egg and tiny fromage frais. Put cling film on and my 6 year old is happy. We do have backup Oat Cheerios which have no sugar and are Gluten Free as Coeliac children. My ds has porridge or scrambled egg every day. I think upping protein is always a good move.

Miladymilord · 17/09/2018 18:40

Bear lower sugar cereal that stuff was mentally expensive when it first came out. Made me cross

DiegoMad0nna · 17/09/2018 18:40

For me the best thing is that a kg of oats costs about 75p, while a 600g box of Cheerios costs £3.30.

Ridiculous amount of money.

MaryDollNesbitt · 17/09/2018 18:53

I buy them. We're huge fans of the faux Lucky Charms B&M Bargains stock too. Fucking delicious! Monday-Friday during term time it's more toast and eggs, porridge, fruit, crumpets, etc. but at the weekends or during the holidays I'm pretty relaxed with cereal. I've always taught my DD to have things in moderation. You would struggle to find a healthier child, despite her Saturday morning bowl of coco pops Wink

'Wrong' for you does not a universal 'wrong' make.

saganorenscarandcoat · 17/09/2018 18:54

Well I feel like some kind of sugary drug dealer now as I've just opened my cupboard and have a few of the class A items!!! A line of Coco-pops and I'm buzzing Confused

luckycat007 · 17/09/2018 18:55

Cereal is my weakness. I could easily demolish a box of shredded wheat bite size in one sitting Blush

CountFosco · 17/09/2018 19:21

We have porridge, granola and weetabix here. But only one of the kids eats cereal regularly (porridge mainly, the granola is for DH). They eat greek yoghurt and honey, fruit, PBJ, cheese on toast, bagels and smoked salmon, eggy bread, fried breakfast (the 8&10 year old can make their own), pancakes (DH has a notion every so often and makes them), and at the weekend we have pain au chocolat!

Wittow · 17/09/2018 19:25

ooooh eggy bread!!! not had that since school cookery lessons! Am gonna give that a whirl in the morning....

tamzinro · 17/09/2018 19:25

@Wheresthel1ght I agree . A bit of very sugary cereal won't hurt as long as they clean their teeth properly

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 17/09/2018 19:37

We usually have porridge oats, Weetabix and granola (I make it - it's easier than picking out the bits no one wants Grin).

The DC love these ^ so not an issue really. We sometimes buy Cinnamon Grahams on high days and holidays Grin.

WittgensteinsBunny · 17/09/2018 20:54

Only as a treat on holiday / during school holidays / at grandma’s.
