Refusing to buy certain cereals for my DC?

Ricekrispie22 · 15/09/2018 16:38

Does anyone else refuse to buy Coco Pops, Krave, Cookie Crisp and such like for their DC on the principle that 11g of sugar (more than a Freddo) for breakfast is just wrong?

I don’t even buy Cheerios.

Sirzy · 15/09/2018 16:41

Yes. I am normally pretty relaxed when it comes to which foods he has. But these are a no no.

What really annoys me is they try to paint them as healthy in the adverts!

MrsCurly · 15/09/2018 16:41

I don't even buy cereal

Merename · 15/09/2018 16:42

Yes. I do slightly guiltily allow Cheerios sometimes as I like them but never that packed with sugar shite.

Theknacktoflying · 15/09/2018 16:42

Short answer - no... but a small bowl of sweetness every now and then is better than eating nothing
But pick food battles .... mine no longer like chocolatey breakfast and prefer the alternatives

AmIRightOrAMeringue · 15/09/2018 16:44

Yep weetabix toast and eggs or porridge in our house. Though haven't been asked for cereal yet I just refuse based on the fact that theyre all v processed (I realise bread can be too) and whenever I have them I need a million times the recommended portion size and am still really hungry and strangely thirsty about an hour later

Theknacktoflying · 15/09/2018 16:44

Duh ... yes! don’t like them but small print often hides just how sugary the ‘healthy,’ option can be ..

WutheringFrights · 15/09/2018 16:44

Rice crispies, corn flakes or shreddies here (although rice crispies often end up as cakes! 😳)

Boyskeepswinging · 15/09/2018 16:45

We have a house rule that we only buy cereals that have less than 20% sugar in them. It's become quite the game and my son was delighted to discover that Peanut Butter Crunchy Nut Clusters are only 6% sugar.

Wheresthel1ght · 15/09/2018 16:47

Buy Aldi versions of all of them. No more harmful than toast and jam.

My dd is a bugger with food so honestly as long as she eats I really couldn't give a rats.

What you do with your kids is your business so yanbu to not buy them but yabu if you judge those who do

LittleBearPad · 15/09/2018 16:47

We have them in multipacks on holiday but otherwise shreddies and rice Krispy

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 15/09/2018 16:49

We also have a sugar cut off of around 20%. Krave is an occasional holiday treat.

Racecardriver · 15/09/2018 16:52

Well I just don't buy that kind of stuff the same way I don't buy meat from aldi or crisps or margarine. Can't say it's a question of principle (I do sometimes buy unhealthy cereals that I like like cherrios or cornflakes), I'm ust not in the habit of buying that stuff.

SoHumble · 15/09/2018 16:55

What’s wrong with meat from Aldi?? Confused

TweeBee · 15/09/2018 16:55

Mine have them for pudding sometimes. It's ridiculous what's marketing as 'children's cereal'.

MissMarplesKnitting · 15/09/2018 16:57

Oat crisp, rice Krispies, cornflakes and shredded are our everyday choices.

I do allow a box of naughtiness at Christmas, Easter and summer holidays. They usually pick Coco pops. I'm ok with that as a treat.

Bimgy85 · 15/09/2018 16:58

Yes. I give them porridge with a tiny bit of cereal of their choice sprinkled on top. It makes them feel like they're having a real treat, meanwhile probably only 2g of sugar!!

Mailfuckoff · 15/09/2018 16:59

Mine have weetabix, rice krispies or shreddes. Father Christmas brings coco pops although I've had an early order for chocolate weetabix instead this year. They have what they want from hotel breakfasts but at home we keep it simple

Allyg1185 · 15/09/2018 17:03

Dear god unclench!Hmm

Blankscreen · 15/09/2018 17:04

Multi grain shapes are pupykar here. 4.5gm sugar per serving.

Some.of the clusters are 13gm of sugar for the same serving size.

Fireworks91 · 15/09/2018 17:07

I genuinely don't get why anyone would buy them, they're basically sweets for breakfast. We tend to have oats and milk or porridge, make these into granola too sometimes. If I buy cereal it is the Bear one or mini shredded wheat, Weetabix etc

TomHardysNextWife · 15/09/2018 17:08

The odd treat at weekends won't hurt .... buy the small multipack boxes. But I wouldn't send them to school on it.

Maryann1975 · 15/09/2018 17:08

What do your children/you have for breakfast if they don’t have cereal? Mine are always badgering me for toast, but I don’t like them having it as they are already having bread for lunch and surely too much bread isn’t good for you?
FWIW, my cupboard contains porridge, weetabix, chocolate mini weetabix, Cheerios, shreddies and crunchy nut cornflakes at the moment. Occasionally coco pops and Frosties depending on if anyone has been shopping with me recently.

LaurieMarlow · 15/09/2018 17:08

I don't buy cereals. Porridge, toast and eggs or muesli in my house.

Poodles1980 · 15/09/2018 17:12

We have a box of coco pops in our cupboard. Child can have them if he wants but he picks porridge 6 out of 7 days. Everything in moderation. I don’t ban my child from eating anything.
