Inspired by a few threads recently.

AIBU to wonder why the hell some people can't add their opinion without resorting to bun fighting and being rude?

Example:

"I think that they should ban fidget spinners from schools. They're unnecessary distractions and cause all sorts of trouble between the children."

"You think they should be banned? What a load of rubbish!! My kid uses these and has no problems whatsoever. Fucking stupid idea."

Just why???

Why can you just say 'I personally don't agree with this. It doesn't seem to bother the kids at school that much IME'.

Both are valid points but there's always one that seems to think that they're right (in their opinion) and that gives them the right to be passive aggressive and rude.

Why?! It doesn't make your point more valid just because you've gotten exasperated and annoyed.

Yep totally agree. Some people are wound up tightly and others are just uneducated and can't 'find' polite words.

Also don't get why some people swear - maybe it makes them feel by using profanities their post is somehow more important?

LokiBear · 15/09/2018 12:47

I find this frustrating too. Although, in the last 24 hours i've disagreed with two posters, we've all remained polite whilst offering an opinion and actually ended up finding common ground. Quite refreshing really.

MissusGeneHunt · 15/09/2018 12:47

YANBU op, I think the best debates are when they are without malice or spite, and even if I don't agree with the opinion, if they're eloquently made, and with some intelligence, the posts can at least be considered.

I have to say, I'm not innocent of writing a quick 'WTAF?!' but I don't think I've resorted to a slanging match!

Also, the beauty of the internet and forums is that there's an 'off button' if you don't like what's going on!! (not pointed at you!!).

Exactly!!

I love a good discussion and I'm perfectly prepared for someone to illuminate issues that I had previously not known about. I am capable of switching my opinion. I love finding out something new and seeing things from a different perspective.

The idea of educating someone, providing a different opinion, of potentially being wrong seems so upsetting to some people Hmm

This title reminds me of Chris Morris' famous disagreement on Brass Eye: “you're wrong and you're a grotesquely ugly freak,” which we often use in arguments in the family... I dread to think what would happen if we forgot and used it on other people..

PlinkPlink · 15/09/2018 14:19

@Giggorata

This made me laugh out loud.

Hope you manage to keep that in check 😂

You must use it sometime on MN though... hopefully people will get the reference. I'm giggling imagining the responses you'd get.

You're WRONG, OP, totally wrong!!!!!!

Actually, I agree with you, some people can be idiotic, some nasty, some don't think about what effect their words have on others etc. Some don't care.

If some people cared more about how they affect others etc. then the world parts of MN could be a nicer place at times. (Other parts can be nice anyway, not all of it needs an attitude transplant.)
