Have spent 10 hours of personal time doing e learning.

Time back yes or no?

No. Son has done in excess of 20 hours for his job but it is unpaid but he does get to keep his job!

Seniorcitizen1 · 15/09/2018 14:39

I am with shalom’s son. If one of my staff came to me asking for time in lieu for investing some of their own time aimed at enhacing their career prospects I’d be questioning their motivation and commitment to the business. Each of my employees has a £1k training account but I would expect some of the work for this to be in their time. A small number have used it to gain a MSc.

Eminybob · 15/09/2018 14:45

Depends, was the training optional, or compulsory for your role?

Boodapoo · 15/09/2018 14:45

Absolutely no. As a manager I'd work with my direct reports so they can allocate time to train but if they to m and ask for unapproved time back they will be in my black book.

Squirelslostnut · 15/09/2018 14:48

Depends which sector you work in really. When I've been in public sector it's very much that any mandatory training whether elearning or otherwise is part of your working day so if you did it in the eve on your computer you could still record on time sheet. If non mandatory then to claim time back it would have had to be agreed with manager

In private sector only mandatory training would result in time back but even then the monitoring of time spent was lax and if I'd presented a carefully filled out time sheet and expected my manager to give me time off i suspect they would have found me hilarious

theaveragewife · 15/09/2018 14:49

Confused I’m in the minority here it seems, where I work training is considered part of the job and we can choose how we train. Not allowing people the freedom of choice and not trusting them to make decisions which will help your business will only encourage them to leave!

Ceeeeeelia · 15/09/2018 14:52

Is it compulsory? If so you should get the time back (but you should have checked before doing it).

If it's optional, not a chance.

Sofizzy · 15/09/2018 15:01

I manage to make time for my staff to do online training during the working day. It's not easy, but i, and the company directors, strongly believe that work is work and home is home. No one should be expected to train or do any work at home.
However, if they chose to do extra qualifications, homework for that is done in their own time, even if they attend college during work hours.

Sofizzy · 15/09/2018 15:02

However, OP, you should have had this conversation with your line manager before doing the training, not after. You should have agreed the parameters before agreeing to work in your own time.

teenagetantrums · 15/09/2018 15:04

I get paid an hour for each online hour l do on training. Wouldn't do it in my own time otherwise.

teenagetantrums · 15/09/2018 15:06

But mine is compulsory. We get about 4hours a month to do and due to work place cant do it onsite

Notmorewashing · 16/09/2018 19:05

It’s mandatory training

OP posts:
Notmorewashing · 16/09/2018 19:06

No time to do it at work due to being over worked in La

If it’s mandatory then definitely you are owed the time back.

EngTech · 16/09/2018 19:21

I have to do e learning to tick the various corporate boxes so I do it in company time, not mine

If it was for personal development then would do it in my time

WhateverHappenedToTheHeatwave · 16/09/2018 20:19

For mandatory you are owed the time. We have to do the same and you do it when working ag home or around other work in usual hours.

Shame you didn't say it was mandatory and your employer was MAKING you do it in your original post! Hmm
