Experiences of a call centre?

Have you ever worked in a call centre?

I wouldn't like it as a career but perfect for a bit of money short term. However I can't understand people there years who see it as their career.

What's your good/bad experiences of call centers?

Mine: the variety of people, hundreds of people from all different walks of life , regular breaks and good structure, lots of friends of the same age and older/younger

Bad: so so so so repetitive, you're a number on a conveyor belt, doesn't matter if you do a good or bad job tbh as you're very replaceable.

And you can't really call ambulance or police a pleb job. And both of them have call centres

I have worked in a very large call centre and I am currently in a similar role but it is far more "office" in nature as it is a very small team.
You need excellent listening and communication skills, the ability to multi task as typing, listening, answering your caller and providing a resolution to the call . NOT a job for plebs but sadly this attitude is shown by callers on a daily basis.
The sheer number of calls and the sometimes stressful nature of the job does lead to great cameraderie.
Most places offer great training and career progression.
As one pp raised, it makes you appreciate the work involved when you have to make a call yourself regarding insurance, utility bills etc, but imo there is never an excuse for rudeness, shouting or trying to bully the person on the end of the line.
In summary, depending on your personality and what you want/need from a job, it is no different to working in many places.

I started in a call centre for a bank 14 years ago, giving people balances...salary was about £11k.

I’ve now got an NVQ Level 5 in Management, an Apprenticeship in Financial Services and qualifications in Business Banking & conduct...all provided free through work.

I work in a very specialised area of banking at management grade, £30k on part time, flexible hours and with a hefty annual bonus. Excellent pension, private healthcare. Could easily walk into a £50k + job elsewhere (have been headhunted by other banks) but thoroughly enjoy where I am.

Perfectly happy with my crappy call centre job thank you Grin

Oh and further to my fuck off comment, I work from home, earn over 45k for a 30 hour week which I work round the kids, work are fully paying for me to attend college where I will get a BA in HR, full dental, medical, life insurance and they contribute 3% to my pension even if I don't contribute and match if I do. Plus discounts etc.

The only plebs are customers who act like they are better than everyone. A bit like you OP. How sad your life must be.
