Washing pod adverts on kids tv

Sat watching an episode of pj masks, with my four year old I might add. There’s tonnes of adverts, toys, kids shoes, upcoming kids shows etc. Then there’s an advert for washing pods. It’s the advert where lots of people chuck in the detergent pods into their machines. All I see is a bunch of adults playing with colourful washing pods like they are toys.

Surely this is so wrong to be on kids tv? We go to so much effort to keep them out of reach of kids. There’s been cases over the years of kids thinking they are sweets and getting seriously ill when they eat them.

Aibu? They really shouldn’t be advertised on preschooler tv shows. And it’s a crap advert anyway.

Im guessing this is on tiny pop? they have normal ads, not just ones aimed at kids. Just dont buy them, quite simple really?!

stressedcatt · 14/09/2018 12:21

Exactly just don't buy them?
The adverts show some very expensive toys but I'm guessing not every adult runs out to buy them all just because their kid caught a glimpse of them?

ADastardlyThing · 14/09/2018 12:30

Surely they show adult orientated adverts like this on kids TV because the kids at risk of eating them are exactly the ones who watch kids TV all day, usually with their parent, so a good way of targeting the parent with the advert AND with the message to keep them out of the way?

At the end of the day, if the parent is being responsible with them the kid won't be able to reach them anyway?

Twinning1 · 14/09/2018 12:36

My point is, if you have them in the house, and a kid sees them on tv, they may think “they look fun, we’ve got some of those” and go off to find them.

Thehop · 14/09/2018 12:37

That’s quite a good point actually

Creeper8 · 14/09/2018 12:37

so keep them out of reach/sight. its really not diffcult.

Twinning1 · 14/09/2018 12:37

My Washing powder is in a locked cupboard (we also have a safety gate preventing access to kitchen) but not every parent is like that are they?

And my point is they should be out of reach.

It even says it on the advert, and on the box they come in Confused

Queenofthedrivensnow · 14/09/2018 12:49

What's a washing pod?

Twinning1 · 14/09/2018 12:51

But why bring them to a child’s attention in first place? Advertise them when kids are in bed during coronation street. Not during pj masks... I think most mums use tv like I do... I put it on when I need to keep my son busy for a few minutes. I left the room and made lunch for example. I’m not a big fan of pj masks funny enough Grin

I'm not in advertising, but if I wanted to target the demographic which are likely to do the washing and get a message across to keep them out of reach of put it on daytime TV which includes kids TV.

Keep them out of reach and no harm will be done.

Creeper8 · 14/09/2018 12:59

It says on the advert “close with a click and keep away from children” If parents choose to ignore that well I cant actually see how its anyones fault other than the parents 🤷‍♀️

SpitefulMidLifeAnimal · 14/09/2018 13:03

Yeah, there's another ad for these pods which says something like "keep them high, keep them safe". YABU.

BikeRunSki · 14/09/2018 13:05

But why bring them to a child’s attention in first place?

Because the advertising pays for the fire kids TV, which parents also watch.

MrsJayy · 14/09/2018 13:06

Are you not overthinking this ? Are you saying kids only watch kids tv and never see washing powde r tablets surely it is a parents job to put their pods away and the advert reminds parents to put them out the way

MrsJayy · 14/09/2018 13:09

I think the advert and its safety reminder is genuis on kids tv parents take notice

Twinning1 · 14/09/2018 13:11

This particular advert was not a safety one, in fact it made them look rather fun to play with

OP posts:
Twinning1 · 14/09/2018 13:12

Agree that the safety ones are fab and serve as a good reminder to parents

Is it the one where they dance throwing them in the drum? Isn't there a pan in a keep awayvfrom children at the end

TheWinterofOurDiscountTentsMk2 · 14/09/2018 13:17

You're not for real, are you? You couldn't possibly be. I refuse to believe it.

ADastardlyThing · 14/09/2018 13:17

If it's the Ariel one where they throw them into the machines it has the "always close with a click" safety message at the end.

Sirzy · 14/09/2018 13:22

This is very much at risk of looking for blame for when parents don’t have the sense to keep cleaning products safe!

Parents will, like you did, find themselves stuck watching kids tv so from an marketing POV it’s a good target audience

Twinning1 · 14/09/2018 13:23

Am I for real? Erm yes. Or maybe these washing companies go to all this effort re safety for no reason at all. Hmm

By the same logic, would it be ok to advertise slimming pills and condoms on kids tv? I mean parents use those items too...
