Sainsbury's Disabled Parking Abuse

SimplySteve · 14/09/2018 09:49

So, my local Sainsbury's is less than 5 mins walk from the local college. There are approximately 10 disabled bays, and at the end of the college day they are all filled with parents waiting to pick their little cherubs up, whilst people like me who need the extra space to get out of the car, and uses a wheelchair cannot park.

Any ideas on what I can do to try and get Sainsbury's to do Something?

AIBU to just park behind them, effectively blocking them in until I return?

YANBU.

Just to add, is it definitely a sains car park? The nearest sains to us actually has a council car park (you get your parking money refunded if you shop in the store). It could be another route to check.

Good luck, what sort of an arsehole takes up a disabled space when they don’t need it? Angry

Definitely a Sainbo car park, this one I'm talking about is a new build and been open 5 years on former disused land. The old premises was 5mins walk away, and the car park there was owned by the council (with the same parking refund scheme).

Thanks @Umpteenthingsclean for the advice and the email address, definitely going over the top of any store manager would definitely be beneficial. I will likely compose my email with advice from Ally.

The area where I live there is a lot of disabled spot abuse, my local Tesco (just a small one in the village - I live rurally) has spot. You get people using it as if it's not designated disabled, and even people parking either side of the bay on the cross-hatchlings to make and extra 2 spaces - it's fucking utter bollocks (sorry for the language).

You've been wonderful peeps, much appreciated Smile

I have a simple view of life, and wonder why abusing a facility provided under the disability discrimination acts can't be treated as a straightforward hate crime ?

Like the scrotes that trashed the wheelchair lift to our local library 10 years ago that can't be replaced or repaired because of funding.

I like to think of myself as placid and probably a bit of a wet blanket, but if I had my way, I'd need a lot of rusty razor blades.

Great. Just PM me when you like :)

Great advice upthread not to park behind and blast horn. It's not worth the risk of escalating in to violence.

Please remember Brian Holmes - punched in an Asda carpark because he was in a blue badge space, waiting for his disabled wife who was in the shop. He died from a single punch, and before his wife arrived at the scene.

Yes it makes my blood boil with rage, but never worth making yourself even more vulnerable.

Fair point @legocardsagain

Apologies OP, it seems that my advice was misguided.

SimplySteve · 15/09/2018 18:17

No need to apologise @BasicUsername , I've appreciated everyone's thoughts on this thread and it's been really nice to get neutral opinions from people that aren't emotionally invested in the situation.

So thank you again to everyone that's posted. This is why I love Mumsnet, and have never been made to feel unwelcome due to being male. Superb Smile

I would photograph the reg plates of the offending vehicles and upload them to the site youparklikeacunt.co.uk (I think I got the name correct)

They love photos of "luxury" models so make sure you tag them with the fact they are in a BB space with no BB Smile

🤔 I don’t understand why people do this. I just wasn’t raised to even consider parking in a disabled bay.

Hell, when I had my 18 month old god daughter in my car I had to do a loop of Tesco car park to decide whether I qualified for a parent/ child space 😂🙈 ...she was asleep and needed transferring to the pram so I went for it! Felt a bit naughty though...weird how programmed it gets in your head.

SimplySteve · 17/09/2018 06:44

Ooo, I'd forgotten that site Malbec (great choice of wine too - my fave!).

I grew up with my father having a mobility issue and having an orange badge (now blue), when I learnt to drive I respected the spots, yet even then my only friend saw the spots as a faster way in and out of any shop, and his exact words if it was raining were "it's pissing down, I don't give a fuck I'm not getting soaked for some old git".

We kinda drifted apart after that, and then I met the love of my life Smile

I don’t understand why people do this.

Because they are cunts There has been lots of research; formal and informal over the years. All sorts of things investigated:

  • Knowledge of what a BB space means (for now BBs are standard across Europe, so it's not that).
  • Visibility of BB markings (however "smart" BB spaces which have a recorded announcement in them still get abuse)
  • availability of nearby non-BB parking

But the overall marker for abuse is still (a) proximity to entrance and/or cashpoint(s) and (b) overall cuntness of the driver.

If the UK gave a rats arse about trying to ensure the less able still have a shot at a decent quality of life, then BB provision - along with the other changes that make life bearable - would be taken seriously. But not only is that not the case. It's getting worse.

@Malbecfan many thanks!! I was having a properly shit day til I used your link!

OP, I hope you get this resolved, it's disgraceful. The PP who mentioned emailing the CEO is spot on.

slashlover · 17/09/2018 12:07

You could try contacting the local newspaper if you have one, or the local council and ask them to have a parking warden available for a while.
