Employer let me go...now what?

I didn't really know where to post this. My employer has chosen not to take me back part time ( 3 days per week) after maternity leave. I know absolutely that it's their right to do so, although have to say I'm very disappointed. Virtually everyone works part time there. Even my colleague with no dependent children finishes at 2:00 as she has to let her two labradors out. Not bitter, honest!

Anyway...just feeling a bit lost and looking for a bit of a hand hold really. I'm going to be looking for a job immediately as i was due to go back next month. I feel like this is such a bad time for me to be starting a new job, baby not sleeping well at the min due to teething and I can't even imagine learning a new skill...I can just about zombie my way through the day as it is!

Has anyone started a new job after having a baby? I just feel like all my confidence is gone (not to mention none of my work clothes fit me at all). I just feel shit!

Wow, some of the responses are exactly why I’m still a lurker and not opened up any personal posts. Shocking lack of compassion from some posters. Flowers for you OP, this is naturally going to get you down and knock your confidence but things will change for the better.

Op, as suggested by previous posters, I would consider seeking some independent advice re your "training" contract. Sounds as though they have failed to meet their obligations and if you don't plan to return, then I would assume you have nothing to lose. Others may be better placed to advise though.

They can obviously refuse you part time working, but this is the same anywhere. It sounds like they weren't a good fit for you anyway from the sounds of it. Good luck finding something new and hopefully a role that will enable you to fulfil your training in the long run. And congratulations for your new baby!

As a professional I would have expected succinct posts.

lawyers succinct?

If you applied for flexible workin but didn't get it, then they do need to provide a reason which trumps your reason for want part-time.
I have very recently taken employer to ET (well they settled ) on this point.

I don't know where you are, OP, but round here (Midlands) competent secretaries are like gold dust. I know that you want to get properly started as a trainee solicitor but, while you get that sorted out, I very much doubt that you will lack for work, if you market your secretarial/researcher skills well.

Maybe talk to a couple of temp agencies to start with? To get a feel for what's out there, and what local employers are after. You don't necessarily have to be flexible about when you work (bearing in mind childcare), in order to do temp work. My company, for instance, would always try and flex for the right person. If you are motivated and a quick learner, you will be highly desirable as a temp.
