Have you come across this alcohol term -Lighthearted. TRIGGER WARNING eating disorders

So I'm in the process of giving up alcohol and have to attend 6 pre-alcohol detox sessions before getting on the detox itself. Terrifying going in but the group is great and full of 'ordinary' people wanting to make a positive change.
This week was a quiz and one question was is there such a thing as drunkorexia. Turns out there is and I'm one(even with my beer belly!). It's saving your food calories so you can use them for alcohol. So go on... Is there anyone out there who does this apart from me?
This is not meant to undermine the appalling and destructive nature of eating disorders hence the trigger warning in the title.

Not heard a name for it but tbh it's sensible to factor in calories from alcohol surely?

lowtide · 13/09/2018 19:04

I think a lot of people do this. If I don’t have a slice of cake I can have a glass of wine etcetc

SmellMyBeads · 13/09/2018 19:06

I can't eat if I'm drinking or the day after drinking. I lose weight if I go on a session. It's not on purpose, eating would be of course line my stomach but I can't.

Threadastaire · 13/09/2018 19:11

I think it's more than skipping cake, more like ' I'll skip dinner go straight out for wine after work, saves money on food less calories AND I'll get drunk quicker, win-win!'
Never been for me (alcohol on an empty stomach gives me stomach ache) but when I worked in town plenty of women in the office did this on a friday, maybe a bit tongue in cheek but not entirely...

(good luck with the detox btw)

smellmybeads what do you mean you can't eat if your drinking? Surely you eat first and then drink? So there's nothing stopping you? Surely not eating before drinking so you can drink is 100% on purpose.

And how often are you drinking that it makes you lose weight? If I skipped a day of food once a month my weight wouldn't change, especially if I'd drunk lots the night before?

Realistically I would chose a glass of wine over pudding for example and I think that's normal, but if I am going on a night out it doesn't happen often enough for me to need to factor in those calories. I'd rather have a good night out and a 3am kebab than worry about calories.

I guess it’s like patsy from ab fab. Who hasn’t eaten since the 60s but drinks like a fish and is rake thin. 3 bottles of wine = 2200 calories roughly! That’s maintenance
It will kill you though.

UpstartCrow · 13/09/2018 23:24

'drunkorexia' means not eating enough food to maintain your health, to save the calories for booze. Its got nothing to do with surplus calories from cake and biscuits.

Octavella · 13/09/2018 23:31

I don't think it's just substituting food cals with alcoholic cals.

It's drinking for the PURPOSE to not eat. There are all anorexics that use speed or other drugs as a way to not eat.

It's weighing yourself dehydrated and feeling happy. Or being hungover and happy you puke. It's all the 24/7 thoughts of an ed. It's not just 'drinking on an empty stomach. '

Btw welldone op for trying to cut down if you feel you want to. Good luck.
