To ask for help re Bucks grammars/uppers

I am relatively new to the Bucks area and looking into secondary schools. We obviously have the grammar system and then the non grammar options. But can anyone tell me more about any of the following:

Dr Challoners (boys)
Chesham Grammar
Royal Grammar School (Wycombe)
Amersham School
Holmer Green School

Are some of the grammars more strongly academic and others more sporty/arty? Or are they all very academic?

How good are the non grammar options if DC don't pass the 11+?

I'm trying to get a feel for each of the schools, their ethos and vibe and which might suit DS best. Will obviously attend open events but any "inside info" would be much appreciated!

I went to one of the girl's grammars in Bucks.

Dr Challeners had the best reputation when I was at school. RGS always did well, but the lads there were often hugely arrogant. My brother went to John Hampton, and I know my parents chose it because it was a more inclusive school with a more caring attitude.

This thread is bringing back memories of my teenage years. I have a memory of John Hampton having building work done and displaying a large sign saying "boys use rear entrance" for a fortnight, much to the amusement to our teenage selves.

Inflafragante that is a very good point. I'd rather have a DC thriving and feeling good in non grammar than scrape into grammar and feel like the poor relation. I got the impression amersham School are very keen on stretching each pupil and it is reassuring to know others have experience of DC being challenged and pushed in non grammar as well as in grammar. Of course I just want each of mine to fulfil their potential as much as possible, whenever that may be.
