age your dc stopped using a pushchair

Really thinking of buying a double pushchair for siblings. One almost 3 other less than 6 months. I want to use it for going nursery playgroups etc as parking in my town is hard to find and expensive. Plus its exercise for me!! When did your dc stop using their pushchairs? I'm thinking its reasonable for up to 4 years old when you're walking more than half a mile with them.

With all six of my kids it's been at age 2. I get rid so am not tempted, also factor in extra time and patience (lots) for walks to school etc. In an urgent situation they can also have a shoulder carry but only one of them needed that.

Lizzie48 · 12/09/2018 21:32

With DD1 we used her buggy until she was 21/2, though we still used it for longer walks up to the age of 3. With DD2, I was having to take DD1 to school so we bought a stroller which was very useful. I was taking her in it until she was 31/2. She used to fall asleep occasionally, which made bedtimes tricky, but if I didn't put her in the stroller she would be constantly asking me to pick her up.

Buy second hand and resell - you'll probably get similar for it.

If you're walking distances to a deadline you keep them in a buggy longer. My youngest was in a buggy occasionally for the school run until he started school. The only judgement I got was from people who drove to school and didn't even try to cajole a preschooler to walk 4 miles a day, every day, to a deadline!

Sharkwithknees · 12/09/2018 21:37

Well before two, purely because she was (and still is) so ridiculously tall. But it was good for her to get the extra exercise. I'm tall myself but now have an eight year old who is taller than some adults 😳😳

AliTheMinx · 12/09/2018 21:40

From memory, around 2. We took a light pushchair on holiday when he was 3, but barely used it as he still preferred to walk.

CherryPavlova · 12/09/2018 21:42

Between two and three. At four I’d be worried if they couldn’t walk far more than half a mile easily.

JynxaSmoochum · 12/09/2018 21:43

Around 4 for both DCs. It was useful for hopping in and out and getting a pace on. I do a lot of local walking from A-B. DS2 tended to be tired around school pick-up for DS1. They are great walkers, the 5 yo can do 5 mile hill walks and run 2k in 13 mins Grin

Yika · 12/09/2018 21:46

My DD was just 4 but would happily have used it for longer. Only got rid because I started to feel embarrassed about having an older child in a buggy. She didn't care! I could not have gone out and about with her without it. I walked less once I gave it up. I love walking and still sometimes miss the buggy days. At 7 she is still a terrible walker - dawdles, hides etc- hard to get from A to B with her in tow.

bellinisurge · 12/09/2018 21:46

4-5. Long hilly walk to nursery. I have MS. It was just easier.

Poodletip · 12/09/2018 21:49

It depends on the child and on the journeys you need to do with it. If the child will use it a scooter is brilliant, makes them move a bit faster and much easier to manage than a double buggy. Not all children would be happy to scoot though.

purpleme12 · 12/09/2018 21:49

I find it odd how a lot of people justify using a pushchair until they're 4. There's nothing wrong with it.

truebluebaby · 12/09/2018 21:54

Gosh I'm jealous of all these two year olds that happily walk everywhere! Mine just sits down when she's had enough.

I do walk a lot though as don't drive.

DownAndUnder · 12/09/2018 21:58

Until DS was 4. He couldn’t do the daily walk to and from nursery and keep up with out springer spaniels walks.

oblada · 12/09/2018 22:00

Never used prams. Only baby carriers. Just under 3yrs between each kid so after 3yrs old onwards they would have to walk. I have been known to carry a 3yrs old on my shoulders along with baby strapped to me though. From 3.5-4 onwards the walking seems considerably easier.

heattreated · 12/09/2018 22:01

well we still use it on weekends with our smallest who is 4 but we live a 4 mile round trip walk away from the town centre and train
station.

tor8181 · 12/09/2018 22:02

the 14 y old never went into one as we lived on a 90 degree hill(mountains of south wales valleys)and there was no way i could push a pram up it,he used to be carried in out arms till he started walking at 11 months

the 8 y old stopped at 17 months(didnt walk till 15)as he was to tall and big for the limit and the wheels just wont go(been a big boy since birth)

he used to walk holding hands and sit nicely on public transport(well the bus)

truebluebaby · 12/09/2018 22:05

You also have to think about naps. My 2yr old still needs a nap so if we're out for the whole day she needs somewhere to sleep.

llangennith · 12/09/2018 22:08

4 and a half. Then we used it to carry all the crap we needed to take on days out to the beach. And his little bike fitted over the hood.

SoftSheen · 12/09/2018 22:09

Used infrequently from 3, stopped completely at about 3.6. But I don't drive and walk several miles a day in all weathers.

I suspect that those who completely gave up pushchairs by 2 don't do an awful lot of walking!

Oly5 · 12/09/2018 22:09

My daughter is in and out of hers still and she’s almost 4.5. We live a long way from school and she can make it there but struggles on the way back.
I don’t care what anyone thinks.
She’s little

Bluesmartiesarebest · 12/09/2018 22:11

One of my DC didn’t walk until they were nearly 2 and we used it until they were nearly 4. I found a buggy useful if we were out for the day so we could pile all our stuff onto it and the youngest could have a nap if needed.

I’m wondering how else you managed with 2 year olds that lay on the floor and refused to walk (when they were too heavy to carry) or was it only mind that did that? Smile

purpleme12 · 12/09/2018 22:13

Yes softsheen. I remember someone at work acting really surprised when I said I still used a pushchair (she was maybe 3 at the time?) And she said hers had given it up ages ago and refused to go in it. I bet she didn't walk half as far as we did.

Onemorefortheroad · 12/09/2018 22:13

Used often until around 3 but have to admit that we took buggy on holidays until 5.5. Was so handy for walking in the heat and evenings! We had quite a decent sized buggy though so didn't look too bad 🙈

KingscoteStaff · 12/09/2018 22:14

DS moved to buggy board or scooter at 2 when DD was born.

Worriedworry · 12/09/2018 22:18

Have you considered taking a sling with you and swapping DC1 into the pram if they get tired and popping baby in the sling?
