To think these portrait photos are a ridiculous price?

So I got a gift of a 'newborn portrait photoshoot' which entitled me to one framed photo and I figured seen as it was free, I might buy a few more photos when I saw them (maybe one for granny etc).

So after planning the morning feeds, sleeps and changes meticulously 😂 to ensure a good(ish) mood we got the shoot done! Afterwards photographer said "So your gift includes one desk framed photo with a value of €140 but you can upgrade to get a wall frame with 2 photos for €350 or with 3 photos for €450". (all photos were 8 x 10 size)
I'm sorry what now?? I nearly dropped the baby on the floor
"But you don't have to decide now" he says.
Erm that's ok, I'm not going to waste your time pretending I'm completely loaded or mad so I'll just take the gift one.

AIBU to think this is crazy money and to wonder who could possibly afford it?

I hope I don't offend any professional photographers, but I am intrigued to know why it cost so much?

The shoot itself took about 10 minutes and involved me placing baby on a white sheet and then standing to the side and trying my best to make her smile. He took about 20 snaps and then I picked one out. Looking at the photo I can't see where the cost comes from. Again I don't have a professional eye but it's just a baby lying on a sheet. Blush

Well this is how they make their money - the upsell with the threat of deleting your photos if you don't commit there and then. Very common with photography franchises which sounds like this is - No good newborn photographer can do a session in 10 minutes!

Just get a good scan/photo of the gift one and reprint from that?

(I have reprinted pics based on phone photos and they have been fine (as camera quality is so high now))

Yeah it probably was something like that, it did seem very quick!
And don't get me wrong I do 100% see the value in professional photos like at a wedding. But our wedding photographer was there for the entire day on his feet, trying to capture every moment and every person, and to create an amazing album which was worth every penny. But this just seemed like madness to me.

In my experience decent photographers charge properly for their time rather than pictures.

The real racket seems to be the school photos - they charged £60 for some digital images last term. I think it’s a massive rip-off.

Sounds very expensive!! I wanted some photos of my son when he was about 2 months old and rang round and some places were very pricey. Eventually found a place that did a good selection of photos printed for €100 or €120, something like that.
