To be upset after screwing up dream job interview?

I want to cry. DH doesn’t get why at all. So this afternoon I had a job interview and it was all going really well. It was for the perfect company in the perfect position. Then suddenly they said they needed me to take a 30 minuite test on Excel. I haven’t used Excel since secondary school. The job description didn’t mention it at all. I spent 20 minuites using the help bar looking up Pivot tables and the like and managed to get a third of the questions done before time was up. I fucked this up didn’t I? I just want to cry.

I once was partly interviewed in French, that was interesting as I don't speak it.

Chin up, might be OK.

Oh that's a real shame. I hope it doesn't put your off from trying again. It doesn't mean there is anything wrong with you just that there was someone else with more experience.

Doing a third of the questions might be really good. It seems to be the trend in job application processes to create an absurdly difficult test, perhaps so they don't have to choose between people who all get perfect scores.

You had a short amount of time to do something you weren't familiar with and you managed to get something done. That's a real world work situation that you've done well with.

I think I'd email and explain you weren't aware excel would be used or you would have prepared better. Say if you got the position you would do a refresher course if it was going to be needed for the role. Maybe give an example of how you're a fast learner and if you've done anything similar in the past. It won't hurt whether they are thinking of offering you the job or not.

Sorry OP. But I would certainly go back and ask why you didn't get it. It may be you did very well in interview, but someone was at your level but could do Excel. You don't say what the job is, but maybe if this is current in that sphere you could spend some time familiarising yourself with that and other programmes. And then launch yourself again. Like other PPs I would have given you pluspoints for trying a programme you only have a bit of familiarity with ... but it's hard under timed pressure.

Don’t do this! You’ll come across as someone who can’t accept no for an answer and they will think you’re too much of a pita to consider if other jobs come up.
It’s fine to ask for feed back but the job has gone don’t keep arguing for it.
