Long haul

Am I being unreasonable to ask what your best/worst long haul travel experiences have been? In particular anyone been to South America?

Flying to new zealand. Plane stopped unplanned at sydney on way there and we all had to disembark. Plane had broken or something and took a few hours to go again. A whole load of people stuck in an airport with no australian money or working bank cards. We got a voucher for food which was enough to buy a croissant and coffee. That was a boring few hours

I returned last week from Colombia. For budget and timing reasons we had to decide between having a long trip there and a shorter one coming back or the other way around. We chose 30 hours going and 13 coming home... It certainly was an adventure!

We flew from Heathrow to JFK, New York, then had to get a taxi to the other airport in NY, LaGuardia. We then flew down to Miami and then on to Cartagena, Colombia. Long old trip, tiring and my poor DSD was travel sick. However, being in Colombia was fabulous and a great experience. The shorter trip back was a relief after flight there!

Forgot to say that when we arrived at LaGuardia at midnight, what they didn't tell us was that this airport closes at night for maintenance! Fortunately a staff member was nearby who let us in and stay in a cafe with some others in the same position. 6 hours of uncomfortable seats, nothing to do and a nauseous DSD - never again!

I've flown long haul absolutely loads. Worst ever was flying on me own w a 6 month old on a night flight to LA. Everyone on that plane (including me and my baby) hated us!

Other than that, I really enjoy long haul flights. I get all prepped w snacks, lotions and a couple of books and I love having an entire day in the air when no one can contact me for anything and I have no pressure to be productive. It's like enforced lazy days.

My long haul experiences have generally been fine. You can get a bit bored/cabin fever-y, but just take it an hour at a time and think about the fact you’ll be on holiday soon, or if returning…you’ll be home soon.

I have 2 flights with bad delays, both coming home. One from Newark near NYC, and one from Toronto. Newark was delayed 22 hours!! We sat on the flight for 3 hours before the pilot said the fault couldn’t be fixed and we’d have to get off. They couldn’t reschedule another flight until almost midnight the next day, so we were put up in a hotel that night and all of the next day. It was Virgin so they looked after us pretty well, we got lots of airmiles as compensation and about $50 of food vouchers…but as our flight was so late the next day most places were closed in the airport! I ended up spending about $30 in Subway just because…the cashier was really enjoying helping me pick out cookies and things at 22.30!!

Toronto was a 12 hour delay, the plane just…didn’t turn up. Should’ve guessed something was amiss when I saw the pilot walking the wrong way with his little wheely bag. This was 8pm and they chartered another flight for 8am. It took ages sorting hotels/vouchers for everyone though and then there was a huge queue for the hotel shuttle, so I didn’t get to the hotel until about 22.00. Virgin were much more organised, this was Air Canada and a bit of a shambles. I was starving but the hotel restaurant had closed when I checked in, so the staff said to call room service but they were hugely busy with my fellow passengers doing the same thing, and said they couldn’t bring me anything until midnight. I had to be back at the airport for 6am, so chose sleep over dinner and kept myself going with the reese’s pieces I’d bought people as gifts. Ooops.

It’s a bit of a running joke in my friendship circle as everytime I go to America/North America this happens! What are the odds…

Yeah, I’ve been to South America. The journey was fine. Loved the destination too!

BiddyPop · 11/09/2018 15:16

I've done a fair amount of long haul (US, South America, and now China into the mix) and DH has done the same but lots of Dubai and South Africa as well. DD has only done USA and China.

DD is normally fine, but occasionally travel sick (it happens in the car occasionally too - and yet she can sail, and ride roller coasters, like she has an iron stomach!). The last trip, we went to China through Dubai, so 17 hours travel from takeoff to landing at the end of leg 2. DD managed fine until about an hour from landing, when she got travel sick, and again, and again - I went through 8 bags on the plane, including 2 after we landed - and one more in the car on our way to our final destination (involved a 3 hour drive and a border crossing from Hong Kong). Luckily, we are used to it, and always carry sick bags in our travel bags and make sure we have them in the seat pocket on board, and have a change of clothes for everyone in the carryon luggage (both for illness or spillages (I had a dinner dropped on my arm by an air hostess on the 1st flight!) and for unexpected loss of luggage from the hold, which has also happened me, usually on 2 leg journeys). And DD is generally ok with it too as its been a lifelong affliction.

BiddyPop · 11/09/2018 15:21

South America was Cuba (with DH and I was pg) and to Brazil (for work so I was solo).

Both were really interesting. Both involved 2 flights (Air France through Paris CDG). Both I was prepared with embassy contacts and lots of meds and muesli bar type foods just in case. No major problems (except a lack of food I could trust as I was pg in Cuba) on either trip. And both were long boring flights before multiple personal choice movies available when it was the screen over your head or your own brick of an actual book.

PeridotCricket · 11/09/2018 15:34

Long haul has generally been fine - except one connection in Singapore when plane delayed by bad weather and had to sprint to get the plane home.

Also volunteered to be bumped off a long haul plane home as in no particular hurry, got a couple of hundred pounds, a night in a hotel, food vouchers and Business Class on the final leg home. It was great!

BiddyPop · 11/09/2018 16:02

Actually, the only major time we had problems with the flight was when we were getting the same AF connection to Paris, but for a weekend in Paris, and our plane was delayed by fog in Paris, and then went "tech", replacement plane went "tech, and after the fire brigade went around inspecting the original plane in front of the departure gates where we were all waiting, we were re-boarded for a 14:30 departure (on a 06:30 scheduled flight!). Lots and LOTS of pax were due to change in CDG to other long haul flights, and many of those were already being rescheduled in Dublin before they ever left the ground.

There was one delay in NYC (JFK) I think, or else Atlanta, due to a storm, but we had an inkling about that and managed to get a slice of hot pizza for DD before the pizza place closed, so she would sleep once we took off and not need dinner (it was originally an 8pm-ish scheduled departure but ended up around midnight) - she was only 7 then but well used to flying and was fine once she had something to eat and a comfy seat.

I fly long haul multiple times per year. No major issues.

Went to South America (Peru & Bolivia) this year, has a great trip to/from the U.K.

hazell42 · 11/09/2018 16:23

Peru earlier this year. No issues at all. Lovely trip all round

DannyWallace · 11/09/2018 16:31

Food poisoning on the way home from Peru. Both me and DH!

But that wasn't the airlines fault. Quite enjoyed Air France on the way out there!
