How to be more hydrated without living in the toilet

Jaffacakesfordinner · 11/09/2018 12:25

Posting here for traffic.

Not gonna lie, my fluid intake is very very poor. Recently started a new medication where being hydrated is important.

On the other hand I have real anxiety about going places and not knowing where the next toilet is. I believe this is where my habit of drinking less came from somewhere in the distant past. Ive always been like it.

Tried drinking much more at work (water and sometimes sugar free squash) but i may aswell just move my desk into the toilet im in there that often!

Please tell me it gets better!!

Watching with interest, I’m the same I can go for a wee upto 4-5 times after one cup of tea 😩

JenBarber · 11/09/2018 12:27

Your body will adapt. You pee out crap, water isn't crap, your body uses it so really you shouldn't pee any more regardless of how much water you drink.

Theoretically you should pee less once you start drinking more.

Give it a couple of weeks.

Slimtimeagain · 11/09/2018 12:27

I sympathise, I have such a small bladder. I wee a lot! So do my brothers. No advice really apart from that I've received some pretty terrible advice from people in the past 'oh just hold your pee in to stretch your bladder' don't do that... unless you want infections!

MaryBerrysChutney · 11/09/2018 12:28

It does get better. Somehow, i now drink upto 3.5L of water and only pee 4-5 times during the day. Earlier it felt like once every 10 mins.

picklemepopcorn · 11/09/2018 12:30

It's partly adjusting, but also about caffeine. It takes a little time, but cutting out caffeine makes a huge difference!

Certain other things affect me too, some herbal teas for example.

Try just water for a few days, see what happens.

gamerchick · 11/09/2018 12:30

Your bladder does adapt if you keep it up, it's just a case of hanging in there. You will feel a lot better if you're well hydrated.

CrunchieFriday · 11/09/2018 12:30

I was once told to think of it like watering a really, really dry plant pot. When you first pour water in, it immediately pisses out at the bottom. As the soil gets more hydrated, it actually holds more water. You can pour the water in without it immediately draining through.

Apparently, this is what happens to your cells - as you increase your water intake, your body "absorbs" more water, and you won't wee as much.

RabbitsAreTasty · 11/09/2018 12:31

Tea makes me wee. I recently discovered it has the same effect on my dad and two of my siblings.

Water seems to stay in me longer.

Mushroomsarehorrible · 11/09/2018 12:36

Stick with it, your bladder will adapt.

I drink 2.5 - 3 ltrs of water a day. I wee on average 5 times a day

hiveofmumsandvillainy · 11/09/2018 12:38

Yes, your bladder should adapt. Over the Summer I had to drink 3-4 litres per day for health reasons, and I was surprised at how quickly my bladder changed, so I wasn't needing to go to the loo more than usual.

LittleMissYorkshireLass · 11/09/2018 12:39

I find that the sugar free squash makes me wee a lot more because of the sweetener in it, you can get some squash without it in, like rocks organic squash and sainsburys and m&s do a high juice that doesn't have it.

Needahairbrush · 11/09/2018 12:41

Yes, me too. I’m a very poor drinker but drinking anything near 2litres during the day keeps me in the loo every 45 mins!

Lucylugs · 11/09/2018 12:42

Try to drink a glass of water first thing in the morning to get your body set up for the day. Also if you gulp it down too fast it goes right through you. Try sipping it and not having it too cold.

ilovechurros · 11/09/2018 12:44

I used to drink very little. However, after starting a low carb diet I started 😵 by 2.5-3 litres of water per day. On the first day I had to wee 32 times! I still drink the same amount but I now wee keep me a normal person. PPs are right, your body does get used to it.

Flyingpigs247 · 11/09/2018 12:47

I totally sympathise!
I don't know what it is but since I had my 4th child I've had real issues with my bladder.
If I have a meeting at my child's SEN school in the morning, I don't have anything to drink at all until after the meeting.
I have real anxiety about asking to use the toilet (which I know is ridiculous on my part but that's just how it is).
The other day I had one average sized mug of tea, and I'm not kidding I went for a wee a total of ten times in the 4 hours that followed!
Basically I'm weeing way more than I'm drinking.
Not sure if it's anxiety related but it's become a real problem.
Day trips are the worst!!! I have this fear of being stuck in traffic without a toilet!!

Jaffacakesfordinner · 11/09/2018 13:24

Thanks for the replies. Comforting to know it will get better. Ive cut right down on caffiene and fairly close to giving up completely now (cold turkey did not work for me when i have to concentrate at work).

flyingpigs im so glad someone else knows what i mean. I hate it when people suggest going scenic routes - even if i dont need to use them, i do take great comfort in knowing service stations are wide spread on motorways!
