..wonder why my landlady’s cat weed everywhere *but* his litter tray?

Just that really.

The cat is young (2.5 yo) and unlike his bro and sis, refuses to wee in his litter tray for some reason. He is healthy, happy, and the vet says maybe he’s just fussy, although his litter tray is immaculate and cleaned out at least once a day.

He’s never been great at doing his biz in the tray tbh, but has progressively worsened over the last year. He wees on carpet, floorboards, over paper, furniture, everywhere. It’s foul tbh, but obvs we are worried about him, and would like to know how to get him to wee where he should!

Any idea from any cat lovers/experts, please? TIA.

How many litter trays do you have? Ideally you need one per cat + one spare, in different locations around the house. Make sure they are big enough, and try covered and uncovered in case he has a preference.

Have you tried different cat litter? Some cats are very picky, and some litter is uncomfortable to stand on, so they pick softer things to pee on. Avoid artificially scented litter.

You may be over cleaning the litter tray - do you use any cleaning products on it? It might help if it smells of him (not necessarily of wee/poo, but of his environment). If you use cleaning products avoid citrus, cats dislike it.

Clean anywhere he does pee with enzymatic cleaner (you can buy urine specific ones, but enzymatic washing powder mixed with water in a spray bottle will do the trick too).

Do the cats get on or just tolerate each other? There might be some stress at play. Make sure they can't block access to resources (food, water, litter, etc), have space to get away from each other, have high up places to hang out.

Sorry for the list, former veterinary receptionist!

Some cats hate sharing! He might need his own litter tray.
