WWYD! Monkey in the office

So, business is not in a good place. The department in particular is literally at breaking point with change and poor service and a Management team who have a poor reputation. Today I walk in to a life size life like chimpanzee sat on a pedestal wearing a company hat. I discussed with Director who was not in office and he arranged for it to be taken down by one of his Managers. Turned out one of the Sr Managers thought it would 'lighten the mood'. I am offended, my colleague was more offended due to years of racist comments made to her and we have requested a formal investigation . Are we overreacting?

I’m trying to work out how much you’d have to pay me to watch a programme with both JD and PM on

As a black woman I am finding mn harder and harder to be a part of these days... Sad

5SecondsFromWilding · 11/09/2018 21:37

Because why is having a monkey in an office any way racist? Can you elaborate

Do you seriously expect people to believe you have no idea?

I think like most things, this needs to be taken with a certain amount of context, very little of which is provided here and most people don't advanced search posts.

If the office environment, specifically, has had issues with racism, then there has been a fuck up, regardless of whether the person whose idea this was has been involved in the racism. Because regardless of the intent, there's a reasonable assumption that some people in that environment will have experienced racism in the office.

If not, I suppose it's about as racist as the Cadbury advert.

Where have you gone OP???? Or is this a DM bomb drop, waiting for the fall out?

Don’t worry I wasn’t imagining that you had it recorded for daily viewing Grin

ICantBelieveIDidThis · 11/09/2018 22:34

Ape/monkey noises are routinely chanted by football crowds.

How anyone can 't think a monkey/ape is racist is beyond me.

Rosetintedglasses454 · 11/09/2018 23:32

@chocolateworshipper
How exactly am I the one who is being ridiculous

chocolateworshipper · 12/09/2018 07:47

rosetinted firstly because this: "how you feel victimised because you have never been called a monkey" makes no sense whatsoever. Obviously no one feels victimised because they have never been called a monkey. No one wants to be called a monkey, let alone feel victimised because they haven't been called it.

Secondly because addressing the inference within the phrase "oblivious white people" does not mean I am trying to make the post about me. I only wanted to make the point that being white does not make you oblivious to discrimination. I had no intention of posting any further about other discrimination, until you posted. So if you're happy to drop it, so am I, and the thread can go back to a discussion about racism, which I find abhorrent - despite not knowing the history of the word "chimpanzee" being racist (which I have now researched and fully accept that it was a gap in my knowledge).
