To be furious with landlord who hasn’t made any repairs to our home in over 9 years but now we want to buy the property, she wants to make repairs and charge us £30k more?!!

We have come into some money... so we are planning on buying the house we’ve rented/live in.
Found out from estate agent it’s value, and it’s at least £40k less than if the property had been kept/or even repaired up to standard. DH and I have been juggling jobs etc making the decision to spend more time with our 2 DCs when they were newborn-pre school. We now have well paid jobs and a decent deposit.
Landlord came over at the weekend and we discussed the value - he said he was going away and would have his own valuation done. Thing is we know (found out by accident) that despite turning up in a convertible he has an interest only mortgage on the property and owes the bank £250k (just off what the estate agent valued it at). He started talking about his options - getting more for the house by making repairs etc.
I didn’t challenge him on it but he’s done nothing to this property in nearly a decade...feel annoyed and like taking our money elsewhere

It sounds like an absolute money pit. Buy a nicer house round the corner!

Another one saying buy something else! When we were thinking about putting in an offer to buy the house we were renting, we decided to view a few other places first just to make sure we were getting the best we could for our budget. We ended up buying a bigger place in better condition and a nicer area for significantly less than the going rate on our old street, and it's been such a relief leaving the old house's many problems behind. Don't let yourself fall into paying too much for a house you're already fed up with.

You are in a good position....

But.... Do you want the hassle of major works?
Unless you have something drawn up - you could be in position that the wants more money over and above the agreed some... Or decides to sell to someone else...

Don't forget costs of actual moving van be quite low...

despite turning up in a convertible

You can buy a convertible for £500 so no idea what that has to do with his financial situation. Might as well have said “despite turning up in a red car” lol

Thanks everyone. We know the landlord is in a precarious financial position and they told me it’s their last chance at making any money. The property is not on a BTL mortgage and we know the LL doesn’t register their status with HMRC. We were hoping we could do the property up. Not have to move. However there are new builds - some available in November which are twice the price. But we have a large deposit and we would get help to buy. Our mortgage would be almost the same as our current rent - and with no repairs to be done. All the windows in the house plus the front and back foot need replacing.

The place is a shit tip, why would you want to buy it? Fuck the LL. Help to Buy is a con. The builders increase the price of those Help to Buy places so you pay an inflated one.
