To think some busy car parks have an excessive amount of disabled spaces?

Every time I go to my local Sainsbury's, i very rarely find a free Parent & Child space, or any space that is not at the very far end of the car park. I've noticed this more recently as I'm heavily pregnant and have a 2 year old so would love a P&C space. There are only 12 parent & child bays, but there are 18 disabled spaces, the vast majority of them are always free. Given the ratio of parents with young children to blue badge holders in a supermarket at any one time, would it not be more sensible to have, say 12 disabled and 18 P&C bays, or even half & half? I've noticed this in places like IKEA and other big supermarkets too (but haven't actually counted the bays!)

PasstheStarmix that pisses me right off! It’s always the last sodding space too Angry

everytime I ope this thread I expect to see a post from MN HQ and the disablist posts gone.
what happened? they have seen this thread, so why is it so quiet? maybe more people need to report?

YeTalkShiteHen · 12/09/2018 16:59

Plenty of disabled people are parents too. Why is there a need to try and divide people up and pit them against each other?

Ask the people doing that, not the ones speaking out against discrimination.

CrochetBelle · 12/09/2018 17:01

Don't be daft Samcro, threads like this generate plenty of page clicks, which of course means £

actualpuffins · 12/09/2018 17:01

At the hospital there seem to be not enough disabled spaces. There are four in closest car park and they are nearly always full.

Personally I disagree that all prams/buggies should be folded every time.

HOWEVER if everyone did so and always vacated the wheelchair space (because that’s what it is) whenever someone needed it, the point wouldn't have been raised in the first place.

So, we’re back to disablism being standard, which is why so many people are so vocal. Because we have to be.

Hilltoptea · 12/09/2018 17:28

My mum is a disabled blue badge holder and always says the same as you op. Most places she goes to seem to have tonnes of empty disabled parking spaces. Obviously not all places are like that but the majority are (where she lives in London anyway).

I don't know how what you've said is offensive? It's just an observation. People can't seem to sneeze without somebody else being offended.

Claw001 · 12/09/2018 17:42

Mycat put it absolutely brilliant

*In order to ensure disabled people have access the ratio of disabled spaces to regular spaces is set by law. The disabled posters on this thread make it abundantly clear that they frequently encounter situations where there aren't enough spaces for them. Yes there may well be places where disabled spaces are always empty (never come across one myself mind).

But, and here's the bit that some seem incapable of grasping, the only way you can reduce the number of spaces in these imaginary empty places is to reduce the legal required ratio. This would then apply to ALL carparks INCLUDING THE BUSY ONES WHERE DISABLED PEOPLE ALREADY CAN'T PARK and all future new carparks.

So what is being advocated will result in the loss of essential provision for disabled people. IT IS DISABLISM*

I don't know how what you've said is offensive?

Because deciding that you want to remove disabled facilities rather than asking for your own facilities or using facilities for able bodied people is disablist.

It’s been explained numerous times, perhaps you didn’t bother to RTFT?

Claw001 · 12/09/2018 17:56

Seems some have the balls to advocate it on here, but in real life. I wonder why?

Let’s start a campaign, take it to our MP, change the Law, get rid of disabled spaces to make more room for able bodied and NT people.

I wonder what the campaign slogan could be? Cars United Neuro Tpycial?

YeTalkShiteHen · 12/09/2018 17:58

Because it’s easy to say things you’d never dream of saying out loud in RL behind the cloak of anonymity. And because they get some kind of perverse kick out of it.

I do like your suggestion though Grin maybe Rees-Mogg could be the spearhead?

Tunnocks34 · 12/09/2018 18:04

My OH is a landscape architect and designs car parks. A certain percentage of car park spaces have to be legally allocated as disabled.i think it’s 2% but most car parks allocate more.

Claw001 · 12/09/2018 18:23

Grin Yetall or Hanson, segregate disabled people, she would lead the way!

YeTalkShiteHen · 12/09/2018 18:25

I’m sure! The sad thing is, I think many people would.

I distinctly remember a thread where a poster magnanimously told me that she’d make sure me and my kids were part of society. Aye thanks love, but we already are! That in itself was exclusionary!

Claw001 · 12/09/2018 18:43

If the Government gave away isolated islands, I’d be first in the queue! Segregate away!!

Tunnock I thought it was about 5%, someone already gave % on the thread, I can not remember though!

Branleuse · 12/09/2018 18:50

@IHaveBrilloHair , i meant there are all sorts of disabilities that are not catered for, or really badly catered for. Where they are unable to access stuff like supermarkets. Possibly even because they dont qualify for a blue badge or are unable to drive at all. I wish some of these disabilities were catered for too

@LeftRightCentre I just meant as a driver who needs to get a parking space, and seeing there are a shit tonne of spaces that are empty but prohibited from being used its frustrating, as it means I cant shop, and its annoying and frustrating because me and my children DO all have disabilities but dont have a BB, and having to then find a different supermarket or not be able to actually use the leisure centre because we cant park, is quite likely to be a very stressful experience.
I dont see how it can be rectified. I certainly dont blame the people with mobility issues who do need these spaces . Im just agreeing with the OP that it can be frustrating to see so many spaces consitently empty in otherwise overcrowded carparks. Im just agreeing with someone on mumnst. Not starting a campaign against disabled bays

BishopBrennansArse · 12/09/2018 19:02

@FrancisCrawford MNHQ are basically disablist anyway. Disablist comments are allowed to stand in the name of 'debate' or 'to educate' and complaints get the response lump it or leave. They stand by allowing right wing shills to silence disabled voices by deleting threads by disabled posters that the shills disrupt knowing hq will delete them rather than deal with right wing shill trolling.

Samcro · 12/09/2018 19:19

Bishop it was starting to get better, but its seems to have gone backwards now. The disablist posters just get away with it.
Really bad

Just read back disabled parking is 4%, there are also rules on the max amount allowed. stats are 4.3% of population have BB’s. So not enough parking.

If you see empty spaces, it is not because there is an excessive amount. The difficulty with pesky disabled people is they drive around and may not always use the same car park!

francis 3am and restricted to the same car park should sort it!

LilyMumsnet · 13/09/2018 12:10

Hi all,

We've had a number of reports about the premise of the thread being disablist. Rather than zap the thread and lose the valuable input from people who have explained why disabled spaces are a lifeline, we're going to close it now.
