To be annoyed people won't spell my name correctly

It's not a particularly zany spelling. It's actually short for my full name and is a widely used abbreviation.

Why do people insist on using a different contraction even when I've emailed them and signed my email off with the name I use? Like Deb for Deborah but they call you Debbie...

It pisses me off and I find it rude.

Should I correct them?

"I agree with this, but people who choose to spell their names in a strange way get on my nerves a bit. Like Nikkii or whatever."

I agree about creative spelings. I know someone who has called her son Konner Confused

YANBU if what you like to be called is also a common abbreviation of the full name, as well as the one they always call you (say, you're Edward but like to be called Ted rather than Eddie, or it's James and
you prefer Jamie to Jim). If it's an abbreviation that isn't generally used YABU. This reminds me of a particularly... ahem... assertive Rebecca who liked to be called Rebs and would have a melt-down if called Becky or Bex. Pretentious twat.

I think a lot of people just don't think it's important, most likely because it hasn't happened to them. DH is like that. I remember one time he was helping DD write a birthday card and I said "Hold on until I get the invite as her name is a non-standard spelling" and when I came back 20 seconds later the name had been written, wrongly. I said "I told you to wait" and DH said "It's fine, it's close enough and there's only one birthday girl so there's no mistaking who it's for." Hmm

That said, I always have a lot of trouble with Mc/Mac. I know that I always have trouble with it so try extra hard, panic a bit and then plump for the wrong one.

This happens to me every day. Seriously. I have a very normal name that people mispronounce as another similar name which is a more common variation - even though they are spelt completely differently (the spelling makes the pronunciation obvious). Also the shortened form of my name, again very common, but people will write back to me with a completely different spelling when I have signed the correct one on my text / email.

I just don't get it, it's bloody rude.

Yes!! I am fed up with people spelling my name wrong. People I’ve worked with for many years. People who have just had a text from me with my name at the end. People who have just read my email the correct spelling in the signature. Friends who should know better. It’s not a difficult or unusual spelling either. Pisses me off

GerdaLovesLili · 10/09/2018 15:04

My name has a very common abbreviation. I've been known exclusively by the abbreviation since I was very small (apart from by my mother who calls me by my full name when she's cross with me).

Almost without fail people chose to "correct" the spelling with an "i" at the end even though I'll have signed my email with it spelt the most common way. DRIVES ME BONKERS.

I had a very unusual surname before I got married (I was delighted to change my name!!). There is a slightly less unusual version of the surname, spelt differently. I was used to this, accepted that people wouldn't be able to spell it, and often found it difficult to pronounce correctly, so I always spelt it out if giving my name. Letter by letter. people still spelt it incorrectly - in front of me. Several times I was actually asked if I was sure that the spelling was correct!! I assured them as it was my own name, I was fairly certain. Some people always know best.

Mitzimaybe · 10/09/2018 15:10

I have an unusual spelling (think Clair instead of Claire or Clare) and let it slide most of the time but when it's people at work and we have frequent email exchanges with my name clearly in the signature every time, I start spelling their name wrongly. If it's Jane I'll write "Dear Jan" etc. I do bear in mind that some people are dyslexic but it's clear that most are just not bothered.

twoshedsjackson · 10/09/2018 15:12

I've fought this one all my life; my first name is spelled the Scandinavian way, in honour of a specific person, not the more usual Germanic way, and I once had even had a teacher try to tell me I'd got it wrong; even as a (stroppy) six-year-old, I was confident in setting her straight! The other one which bugged me somewhat was getting notes from parents with (fairly common) surname misspelled, or incorrect title, despite my name on the classroom door, letters home with my name at the bottom. Just don't expect me to deal with your nitpicking gripe until I've had my little nitpick back....

BlueUggs · 10/09/2018 15:20

My name has 2 spellings. I get the rage when people spell my name the other wrong way.
I correct them once.
It's very very irritating when your name is on the email they are replying to and they still spell it incorrectly!!
YANBU!!

I got pissed off and replied to his email, the first line was:

It's XXXX

He is a bloke who's trying to power play me but he's a bit shit so I'm not really interested in the game he's trying!

Just been in a meeting with him schnecking all the other blokes & it was sickening. Looking forward to him reading my email.

Glad I'm not being too pedantic.
