Dottie for rottie but oodles for poodles

I've always had a dog. After loosing my Heinz 57/had mix. I'm ready to commit to a new friend. Ds 16 wants a rottie or gsd, however me and little ones love scruffy poodle crosses. I think we should get a dog to suit the youngest member of family. Dd almost 7. I'm also nearly 50 and disabled.
Although i can afford a dog walker I'm wary of taking on a large dog that needs loads of exercise, especially as it's a huge commitment. To be honest I'm happy with a mongrel mut, but daisy,ds and DM think a small dog will be happy and won't deter intruders.
I'm torn

A poodle cross will need a lot of grooming both by yourselves and a professional which can be a massive hassle.

Maybe biased here but Rottweilers Male fab family members with the time and training they deserve. Don’t get a big hardy breed like a GSD or Rott if you haven’t got the time to train and teach them good manners. Both make fabulous family dogs, both brilliant to make you feel safe too.

Why don’t you pop down to your local rescue and see what they have there? Might find the perfect match with a little searching and a pup gets a second chance too.

Is Ds going to walk a larger dog? Or play with it?

I'd get a small dog that can forgo a walk occasionally if the weather is bad. They don't eat as much - but can be picky.

We have a rottweiler, only the adult dc walk her.
Smaller ddog would be better for your younger dc to have freedom with.
As much as I love ours, she is a handful!!
Have you considered a Lurcher?
Very dc friendly!!

Small dog lovers here! We compromised and got a show type cocker spaniel, from a rescue. Beautiful temperament and much calmer than it’s working counter part, so not too much walking needed.

Just because a dog is small, doesn't mean it likes small walks as well. I have got a toy poodle who likes to walk for miles, and in fact needs it otherwise she becomes a bit hyper.
If I want a peaceful evening, a long daily walk is the only way to guarantee it.
Small dogs are just as good as big dogs for alerting you to intruders.
Hope you get the dog you want.
