To think this is a good use of my spare time

I am looking for work and currently unemployed (long story, unexpected, only since Friday). Background is technical sales and project management.

Husband thinks I should start applying for jobs today, but I think I might be better to throw myself into some online training for a while and get some formal industry recognised certification.

Money isn’t an issue for a couple of months at least, and I would hope to then have a better chance of getting a position and possibly command a better salary.

What do people think? Also is PRINCE2 the best certification, and if so does anyone have experience of good online training they can recommend?

Thanks

Surely you could do both? Job hunting online takes an hour or two a day, leaving you six hours to study. Even if you got the first job you applied for, you surely won't start work for 6/8 weeks and won't get paid for another 4.

I'm afraid I'm with your DH here. Two months isn't a very long time at all and it might end up taking longer than you estimate to get a new job.
Also, as a PP said, nothing to prevent you doing both at the same time.

ILiveInSalemsLot · 10/09/2018 07:35

Do both and put on your cv ‘currently studying ....’

Duckherding · 10/09/2018 07:36

If you applied for a job today interviews could be weeks away.

Everyone has Prince ii so in one sense yes but it another it doesn't fit with some industries.

Find the job you want identify what they are looking for and decide your training needs from there.

Butterymuffin · 10/09/2018 07:39

I'd agree with doing both. You'll need to update your CV straight away in any case as if a great job comes up you don't want to be scrambling to do that.

anotherangel2 · 10/09/2018 07:42

Another saying both

Newsheet · 10/09/2018 07:49

Just to add. Where I live unemployment is currently less than 1%.

I know enough people that if I needed a job quickly I would be amazed if I couldn’t find one in half a day.

I am really looking to make sure that when I do get a job it’s the best one I can get, and looking for advice on the best certifications and courses.

Do both and use the job ads to see what qualifications are in demand for the roles you aspire to. PRINCE is suitable for certain spheres while others are more suited to agile. No need to wait before applying, online training won't take up all your time. People often get these qualifications while working.

chocatoo · 10/09/2018 08:16

Bearing in mind your update, I'm going to go against the grain and suggest that you take a few days to investigate your options. Also just spend some time chilling and getting your head in the right place for interviews etc

AnnieAnoniMoose · 10/09/2018 08:21

You should do both.

A job isn’t a ‘one off’, it’s not a life time commitment. It doesn’t need to be ‘the best one you can get’. It needs to bring in money. You can keep on training and looking for a better job.

I take your point, but I disagree.

I don’t need to rush straight back to work, and if that situation ever changes I could probably be working the day after as long as I wasn’t too fussy.

Yes I could train alongside working but by taking a few weeks out I can easily train 25 hours a week and still have more free time than if I was at work. Then, hopefully, in a few weeks be better qualified to take a better position.

If anyone has real life experience of decent online training and exams I would be grateful for recommendations.

Thanks
