Any doctors about?

Dh has hurt his foot. Jumped off a bit and landed on a cleat.

It's really painful but he can put a little weight on it. He's point blank refusing to see a doctor (twat) and I'm worried he'll go further damage.

Any thought?

Please don't answer saying he has to go. I know that, he just won't. Angry

Raise. Ice. Rest.

Given that swelling though I'd say A&E.

Merryoldgoat · 09/09/2018 20:39

Personally I’d leave him to it, no assistance and no sympathy.

He knows he needs medical assistance but if he’s too pig-headed then let him deal with it.

I don’t understand the attitude that won’t seek help that’s obviously required.

Bimgy85 · 09/09/2018 20:39

With that bruising it'll get worse and worse until you get it seen to.

MrsMozart · 09/09/2018 22:22

Just to add - if there's a break and it's not managed properly then he could be setting himsef up for a lifetime of pain and odd walking.

WineAndTiramisu · 09/09/2018 22:30

With that bruising and not being able to weight bear, he likely needs an x-ray (obviously needs an examination to properly decide). I'm an ED doctor, but you can't make him go, it's up to him I'm afraid. Has he given any reasons why he won't go?

Cardiganandcuppa · 09/09/2018 22:35

Leave him to be an idiot and go to ned.

It needs to he checked out. You trying to make things marginally better for him won’t change that, so don’t bother.

Go to bed and I bet he’ll change his mind.

glagdy · 10/09/2018 00:39

Sorry I should have mentioned we live in the States and have no insurance so we're looking at over £1500 for a doctors visit and X-ray. But we can put it on our payment plan. It's a factor in why he won't go though.

Also, him and his family chainsaw for living. They're 'tough'. Hmm

Even his Dad said he needs to go to the hospital tonight though.

glagdy · 10/09/2018 00:40

He had a tick bite with a bullseye rash and then full blown lymes and the daft annoying twat wouldn't go to the doctors.

He thinks going to the doctor is weak.

Ah, US medical insurance (or lack there for).

Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. Don’t put any weight on it. Seriously - no weight. Maybe buy a pair of crutches from Walmart or Walgreens. Keep trying to persuade him to go to an urgent care centre if not an ER, they can usually do X-rays there and are used to uninsured patients.

An x-ray would be the best option but you can’t pick up a man child and plonk him in the car in the same way as a toddler.

Uncreative · 10/09/2018 00:48

Oh, elevation should be above the level of his heart if possible.

SeaToSki · 10/09/2018 00:50

So normally I would say he needs an xray, but he may want to play “its not a displaced bone roulette” given the $$. So warning signs that he should go immediately. Any numbness or tingling in the toes, instep, heel or ankle. If any of those parts start to get cold, look white or blue. If he starts to run a fever or feel flu-ish.

In the meantime, elevate, ice every 20 mins throughout the night and a max of 200mg of ibuprofen every 2 hrs (you can bulk it up to 800mg or 4 regular motrin every 8 hours)

It is also worth calling around in the morning to find a practice with xray facilities and negotiate on price if you walk in with cash up front.

If its not a displaced fracture and he doesnt have tendon or ligament damage, he would probably just have to rest it and ice it, so an xray may not change the treatment. BUT he is running a big risk that it is displaced or that the treatment is that he should be non weight bearing etc

glagdy · 10/09/2018 01:35

He won't stay off his feet. He won't ice it. We ha e crutches and a knee scooter from when I broke my foot but he won't use them.

I managed to put some arnica and cbd oil on it but that was stupid because now it feels better and he's moving furniture. (And occasionally shrieking in pain.)

Fucking asshole manbaby. He could end up costing us way more. Angry

Ironically it was a year ago today I injured my foot and got a terrible lisfranc injury. If I hadn't googled it and realised what it was I could have been off my feet for years.

I was non weight bearing for four months as it was. He knows how serious these things can be.

He does a manual labour job, he's self employed. I'm so mad at him right now.

If he is actually shrieking in pain I'd say it needs to be seen.

Deaf ears tho eh

Want2bSupermum · 10/09/2018 01:44

Urgent care is much cheaper than ER. DH broke his foot and urgent care was $700 including X-rays. It showed to be a break and he went to a podiatrist who charged him $120 for an appointment and boot to wear until he could walk without pain. Then DH found his insurance card!

ER is the most expensive place to go for medical care. Avoid it at all costs unless you are being admitted because then your daily deductible comes into effect.

If you are close to NYC you can borrow DHs boot.

xsahm · 10/09/2018 01:45

Is there anyone he will usually listen to, a friend or sibling - could you get them to talk to him? If he's self employed it's all
The more reason to see someone as doing nothing could cost much more in long run. Good luck

It looks well worth being seen. It definitely needs RICE. Applying the Ottawa rules yourself is not advisable, but gives you some idea if he needs dragging by his ears for an xray today

Want2bSupermum · 10/09/2018 01:51

More to the point, why don't you have health insurance through your state?

Your DH is self employed and all of our friends in this situation either have a spouse who works for the benefits or they have coverage through the state. It's highly irresponsible to not make sure you have either the coverage or funds saved to pay for something like this. You know where you live and you know how it works. Makes zero sense to me why you wouldn't sort yourselves out.

glagdy · 10/09/2018 01:55

I went for a foot X-ray (actually several and mri also) less than a year ago and that was the cost.

We can put it on to our existing payment plan.

We don't have any urgent care places around here, we're very rural.

@Want2bSupermum thank you! We're up in Maine so a little far.

We would skip the er (who were misdiagnosed me) and go straight to the podiatrist/orthopaedic section of the hospital. You can self refer and they were quicker, cheaper and more knowledgeable than the ER.

OP posts:
glagdy · 10/09/2018 01:58

@Want2bSupermum did you mean to be so rude?

We have the money to pay for it thank you.

Health insurance through the state? I'm not sure what you mean. We earn too much to qualify for Mainecare but our health insurance premiums would be around $1200 a month for our family and there is interest free payment plans so at the moment see that as a better option.

glagdy · 10/09/2018 02:03

@planetclom just because we have no insurance doesn't mean we can't or don't see doctors. Have you actually read the thread?

It's amazing how anti American sentiment is allowed to stand on Mumsnet.

steff13 · 10/09/2018 02:05

I thought it was the law that you had to have health insurance here now. Wasn't that part of the Affordable Care Act? Have you tried health insurance.gov?

Want2bSupermum · 10/09/2018 02:59

Here in NJ, no matter your income, if your employer doesn't offer you health insurance or you are self employed you can buy through the state run exchange. At the end of the year they assess what you have paid compared to your income and if it's more than 10% of you AGI on your tax return you get a refund for the amount extra paid from the state. Every state is different.

I'm just not understanding why anyone, with the current laws in place, would not have health insurance sorted. We all know the costs of not having insurance are higher than the premiums when things go wrong.

glagdy · 10/09/2018 11:52

It's not like that in Maine. We've tried to go through everywhere. The cheapest insurance we can get is $1200 a month. We simply don't have that to spare.
