To think that a lot of 'upcycling' is bollocks?

Lots of it on Facebook selling sites.

People get a lovely old, wooden piece of furniture, slap some white paint on it and think they've actually done a good thing. Often, they've taken a beautiful 1930's walnut sideboard or such like, and vandalised it.

Just why? Why can't these people get a useful hobby?

I'm glad 'brown' furniture is out of fashion as I have managed to furnish the whole downstairs of my new house in cheap as chips (solid and sturdy) vintage g-plan furniture off eBay. My house is varying shades of warm honeyed teak and I just LOVE it.

However, a second hand super knotty pine cupboard I bought for the hallway upstairs is destined to be painted, I just don't know in what yet!

pigsDOfly · 09/09/2018 18:29

Goodness OP. I thought this thread was going to be a bit lighthearted.

Didn't realize that not liking something like painted furniture was not allowed as a thread subject and could result in such vitriol from some posters.

SoupDragon · 09/09/2018 18:32

I'd love a mid century bedroom set- in dark wood.

Easy to find where I am.

Why is not liking something immediately seen as being 'snobbery'?

OP posts:
MulticolourMophead · 09/09/2018 18:36

I do like some painted furniture, but not shabby chic. A simply done paint job can set stuff off nicely.

I've got an old 1930s writing bureau, which I got for £30. I've wanted one for a long time, but this one does need a little TLC and the varnish is too dark for my taste. So, I'm planning to sand it, either paint or revarnish with a lighter colour, and replace the knobs. I might need to replace the leather inset in the lid.

Point is, we all like different things.

SoupDragon · 09/09/2018 18:40

It’s all to do with how you say it.

mimibunz · 09/09/2018 18:41

Because ‘snobbery’ is the go to reason you’re not allowed to express an opinion about taste. I’m not clever or eloquent enough to pinpoint the issue. Sorry, OP. I agree with you.

ProfessorMoody · 09/09/2018 18:43

If people don't like it, cool.

Why come on here to slate them though? Use snobby, nasty comments like :

Why can't they get a useful hobby?
Shabby shite
Philistine
Chimps
Vandalism

They're all words and phrases being used to denigrate others for having a different taste. Make out that I'm "insane" (nice choice of ableist word there, OP) as much as you like, but you're the one who has come on here trying to deliberately make people feel bad for liking something. Yes, that's cunty.

mimibunz · 09/09/2018 18:44

SoupDragon But this thread is for those who agree with the OP. Let us have our say without having to couch our words.

Promo, if someone on an Internet forum can make you feel anything, then that’s on you. We’re adults, not bullying just expressing our views and you joined this thread to have a tantrum.

SoupDragon · 09/09/2018 18:47

this thread is for those who agree with the OP.

Is it? I thought it was posted in “am I being unreasonable” not “agree with me or else”

GreenTulips · 09/09/2018 18:47

ProfessorMoody

How about 'OPs feels like it vandalisum' ?

Better?

I think someone has a vested interest in the shabby chic market continuing .....

Oh dear, get this pulled?

ProfessorMoody · 09/09/2018 18:49

I couldn't give a flying fuck. My comments are to do with people sneering at others for having different tastes. It could be anything, just so happens that on this particular thread it's furniture.

BabySharkDoododoo · 09/09/2018 18:50

YANBU. And yes, usually whatever changes are made actually ruin stuff.

ProfessorMoody · 09/09/2018 18:52

How am I supposed to know that you have complex PTSD?

Erm, you don't. That's not the point.

And in fact, how are you supposed to know that I (or anyone else) doesn't?

Again, nothing to do with it.

OP is right in that her thread title made quite plain what this thread was about - no-one forced you to read it

I commented on the thread because of the title. Perfectly aware of what it was about. This is a discussion forum, you're aware of that, surely?
You have taken the piss out of "Trigger Warnings", no one else.

As for being "dragged up" you are the one with a mouth like a sewer on this thread

Aww, don't you like swearing? Probably shouldn't be on Mumsnet then.

caroline161 · 09/09/2018 18:52

What about the programme that woman who takes all that crap from the tip and then spends 8 million pounds doing it up and then sells it to someone in that sort of Harry Enfield "we saw you coming" type way.

ButchyRestingFace · 09/09/2018 18:57

Again, nothing to do with it.

About as much to do with it as your revelation about complex PTSD on a thread about painted furniture.

I commented on the thread because of the title. Perfectly aware of what it was about. This is a discussion forum, you're aware of that, surely?

I'm aware of it. Judging from your responses on this thread, you hardly seem aware of it.

You have taken the piss out of "Trigger Warnings", no one else.

You seem extremely triggered by this thread.

Aww, don't you like swearing? Probably shouldn't be on Mumsnet then.

I didn't say that I don't like swearing. Grin I was commenting on the rich irony of someone with a mouth like a sailor accusing anyone else of being dragged up.

FlyingMonkeys · 09/09/2018 18:59

Well this all went downhill quickly...

Bluewidow · 09/09/2018 19:00

I think it's each to their own
Isn't it. And from an environmental point of view it's good to keep
It out of landfill and to reuse.

Some people may do this as its a cheap way for them to
Be able to have some
Furniture. Bit of time and a bit of paint and you have your very own unique piece.

ButchyRestingFace · 09/09/2018 19:00

Well this all went downhill quickly...

Just a bit. And to think I actually like shabby chic and garishly painted furniture... Sad

Bluelady · 09/09/2018 19:00

I just saw that Ercol furniture went on a bonfire 😭
