Harry is so angry and there's so much teenage angst.

He should have done occlumency properly. I know snape was shitty but he didn't even try!

The only good thing in the book is Ginny becoming her own character. Book Ginny is 10000000% better than film ginny.

Why didn't he use the mirror Sirius gave him?

Anyway! My DH thinks I'm VU to not read that book when I re-read them! I also hate the chamber of secrets as a film it's dreadful! So aibu?

Harry's "CAPS LOCK OF RAGE" (as we called it on a website at the time!) is completely muted in the film; when he arrives at Grimmauld Place and the twins appear and say he's been shouting, but he barely raises his voice. Doesn't come across well at all.

I agree, it's like Jo suddenly realised that teenagers have all kinds of emotions and that the main three would definitely be a bit fucked up after everything that's happened, so decided to start writing in more tension.

I love Umbridge though, great evil character. I'm sad they cut Firenze and Astronomy out of the films, though, and is never explained how the twins got their shop money in the film (I guess like a lot of corners they cut). But the absolute worst bits in the OotP film are the "humour". It goes against all the angst and tension, it's odd to watch.

OotP is an awkward book in some respects, but it's kind of nice that even the heroic characters are flawed. And Umbridge is so wonderfully written - simultaneously twee and utterly evil.

ITV have started an 8 week rerun

I'm skipping 1 and 2 Grinthey are kiddy films and badly acted with some shocking CGI

Yes I found OOTP very frustrating and Sirius death unnecessary

TheChatsPyjamas · 09/09/2018 16:38

I used to feel the same about the mirror but then my dh pointed out harry is a bit dim and it made more sense.

But whhhhhhy whhhhy whhhhhhy whhhy at some point doesn’t Sirius send a message via Molly or when harry talks to him through umbrage’s fireplace? “Harry, why are you risking expulsion to talk to me like this when you could use the mirrors?”

IHeartKingThistle · 09/09/2018 16:40

Am I the only Potterhead whose favourite book is OOTP then?!

dracolovesharry · 09/09/2018 16:40

YABU for saying Ginny is even remotely interesting

PhilomenaButterfly · 09/09/2018 16:42

There's teenaged angst because he's a teenager. Hmm

theWarOnPeace · 09/09/2018 16:50

Ooh another love/hate HP thread! I don’t skip OOTP but it does bloody annoy me, the mirror in particular. I actually don’t think Harry is as cut up as he ought to be as being essentially THE cause of Sirius dying. I know he was grieving, but he really fucked it up there and seems to sweep his role in it under the carpet really. The film is remiss I’m not mentioning Harry giving the twins their start up money, and agree that the angst is laid on really thick in comparison to the previous books/films, so throws you off a bit, but it should have been more present in the first place.

DesertIslandPenguin · 09/09/2018 17:26

Angry Harry and Emo Harry in Half-Blood Prince really get on my wick. I can't help but think that if Dumbledore had sat Harry down and given him full disclosure about Voldemort and Sirius, including his belief that Sirius was innocent, then things would have been much different. Dumbledore's insistence on being mysterious is rather annoying on my current re-read.

MiamiLogic · 09/09/2018 17:36

OOTP needs a good edit and yes, Harry is a dick but he’s also a 15 year old boy! Have you ever met a nice 15 year old boy?! 99% of them are complete arseholes, and they’re not facing Voldemort and recovering from seeing their friend be murdered in front of them!

GOF is my least favourite book, not that I don’t like it but it’s just the bottom of the heap. It’s a fucking awful film though.

AndPeggySchuyler · 09/09/2018 17:47

OOTP was always my favourite book! I re-read a little while ago though and had a bit of a revelation! I had been reading caps lock Harry as ‘angry/hormonal’ but actually, is he not suffering from PTSD? Previous summer he witnessed Cedric die and Voldemort return! Did he get any proper help or therapy? Of course not, Hogwarts’ terrible pedagogy at its finest!! Actually, might go re-re-re-read Grin

YABVU!!!! One of the best in the series imo!
