Shopping trolley Gestapos!

Happy to admit if I am/was unreasonable to do this:

Earlier today I was at the supermarket with my elderly father and my four month old daughter. There were no parking spaces available in the parent/child section (not unusual - there is hardly ever any free spaces there!) so I had to park round the other side of the store - the car park is quite big as it is a superstore. It was not raining at this point, so I carried my baby to the other side of the store and picked up a baby trolley from where the parent/child spaces were.

After finishing shopping, I unloaded the bags in the car.... my daughter was crying and crying because she hates being strapped in to her car seat (she's fine once we are on the road, little speed demon!), it was pouring down with rain at this point. I took the baby trolley to the nearest trolley park (about 3 spaces down) and left it there. Admittedly this was nowhere near the parent and child spaces.
As I am walking back to the car, I hear a woman shouting at me that "That trolley doesn't go there" and then she shouted "Lazy bitch". I turned round and saw her stood there glaring at me, and I couldn't help but start laughing, out of shock! ! I found it funny but I think this annoyed her further.

AIBU to think this was an overreaction to me leaving the trolley in this trolley park? The trolley park was not overflowing, there were plenty of empty spaces to put her trolley and get her £1 back. I just didn't want to walk my trolley round to the parent and child spaces in the pouring rain, when my four month old daughter is screaming bloody murder in the car and my elderly father is getting distressed by it (he has early onset dementia)

Thoughts? Am happy to accept if it is agreed that I am a lazy bitch! And if so I will take the trolley back to the parent/child spaces next time, I just felt like it was a bit rude to call me a lazy bitch loudly enough so that all the surrounding shoppers could hear.

Yanbu. She was very rude.

holidaylady · 08/09/2018 22:45

Yanbu

Guarantee you she wouldn't have harassed a dad doing the same thing

Jumbojem · 08/09/2018 22:46

You weren't being unreasonable! What does it matter to her?! You had two people needing your attention. Far more important than a trolley.

newroundhere · 08/09/2018 22:46

YANBU - you put the trolley in the trolley park. I can't see that you needed to do anything else!? Hmm

MadameButterface · 08/09/2018 22:48

Oh dear, some people have no lives at all, laughing in her face was the perfect response

msannabella · 08/09/2018 22:48

As long as you didn't leave it in the road, then you anbu. Surely a trolley park is for all trolleys. I just put mine back in nearest one when I have a baby seat trolley. Rude woman!

LastOneDancing · 08/09/2018 22:48

You took a trolley back to a trolley bay.
For all she knew the next person to park in your spot might also have a baby & be really glad for it.

polkadotpixie · 08/09/2018 22:48

As long as the trolley is put in the trolley park (any trolley park) then YANBU or a lazy bitch!

I only get annoyed when people dump them randomly in the car park rather than taking them back

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 08/09/2018 22:49

It would never occur to me that baby trolleys "belong" near the P&C spaces.
As you found out, people parked in standard places also need baby trolleys

Stroller15 · 08/09/2018 22:49

YA definitely NBU! She was rude. If this is now another rule to keep to as a parent at a store, I don't ever want to shop again.

Alpacanorange · 08/09/2018 22:49

I have not read your op however yabu to compare trivia to the gestapo.

Parisbun · 08/09/2018 22:52

I reckon that any trolley not left sitting in a parking space is good enough. Some people love to make a drama out of nothing. Well done for laughing at her.

Ilovemuesli · 08/09/2018 22:53

I feel vindicated reading these responses :) I didn't think I was BU but was prepared to accept if so (!)

Part of me wishes I had told her to get lost, but I'm glad looking back that I didn't! I don't want to be the loudmouth that starts shouting abuse in a public car park (!!!)

I don’t understand her point. Customers should return trolleys to a trolley park so they don’t block parking spaces or damage cars. That is the only point. It’s not your job to ‘file’ them in a specific bit of the car park. There isn’t enough room for every parent so to park in the P&C spaces anyway so it’s surely more convenient if each trolley park has a variety of trolleys. You’re not lazy & she’s the bitch.

CloudCaptain · 08/09/2018 22:53

Was this woman staff or just a random customer? I would have laughed at her too. She's lucky you didn't launch it into the nearest canal or ride it down the street. Wink

GlitterGlassEye · 08/09/2018 22:55

It’s an actual job in my local Asda superstore (and most likely all Asda’s, other supermarkets) for someone to collect the random trolleys left lying about so you’ve not done anything wrong Confused.

Ilovemuesli · 08/09/2018 22:59

@Cloud Captain, she was not staff, just another customer returning her trolley back :-)

My old dad used to say if you find yourself in one of these situations remember that it takes two to make a scene but only one to make a fool of themselves. He passed away a good few years ago in his eighties but l still always stand there smirking smiling annoyingly whenever anyone starts randomly having a go at me. So you reacted perfectly afaic and ywnbu.
