To think Slytherins stand no chance?

Just caught the end of the Philosopher’s Stone and I felt sorry for the Slytherins being stripped of the House Cup because of last minute points being awarded to Harry and friends. Their colours are changed and everything, I think it’s cruel.

No wonder so many of them turn out bad, they’re treated like villains from 11!

I loved Snape and all the way through the films l was so hoping he would be a good Wizard and he was Yay!

DannyWallace · 08/09/2018 21:34

Also, snape was NOT nice!

I get why people like him! He saved lives, I'm not disputing that!

But...he's still a nasty bully! Look how he treated Hermione when her teeth were cursed! Or how he treats Neville. Or his infatuation with Lily!

I may be too into this argument though..... please stop me 😂😩

JynxaSmoochum · 08/09/2018 21:34

I've wondered for some time if the sorting hat toyed with the idea of putting Percy Weasley into Slytherin. He was ambitious enough to put his career ahead of his family for some time before changing his mind of his own accord.

Nott's father is a Death Eater. It was referred to briefly by Slughorn who wished to disassociate himself from them. He wasn't too bad for a Slytherin. He was ambitious through promoting his favourites but didn't penalise others too heavily (like Snape). He was open to a range of talents including Ginny's Bat Bogey Hex Grin

LeopardSpots1 · 08/09/2018 21:35

No, LegallyBrunet, they do leave the hall, but some come back with Slughorn. There’s a part near the end when an old head of Hogwarts comments that Slytherin House played its part.

An interesting quote from Rowling: “A part of the final battle that made me smile was Slughorn galloping back with Slytherins, [cut] they'd gone off to get reinforcements first, you know what I'm saying? But yes, they came back, they came back to fight, so I mean - but I'm sure that many people would say 'Well, that's common sense, isn't it? Isn't that smart, to get out, get more people and come back with them?'“

Didn’t Snape dock Harry Hermione and Ron 50 points each for spurious reasons earlier in the year? Definitely in the book, can’t remember if in film. Therefore Dumbledore was just restoring the points. The 10 for Neville are what swung it. But if Snape hadn’t docked the points in the first place the points it would have been a draw before Dumbledore gave addional points to Harry and co.

LeopardSpots1 · 08/09/2018 21:40

I agree that Snape wasn’t nice. He was quite happy to support Voldemort’s ideology and it was only because Lily was in danger that he changed his mind. He didn’t give a toss that Voldemort wanted to kill millions of others. I don’t know why Harry named a child after him either.

But Gryffindor were only last because they lost 150 points when they wen to Hagrids and Malloy told McGonagle. Malloy didn’t lose any points for that (although he did get detention).

I do agree that Dumbledore made a lot of mistakes in the books that frustrate me but then so does Harry, their mis-communication sometimes really annoyed me.

LegallyBrunet · 08/09/2018 21:45

Ah, thank you, it’s been awhile since my last rereading. I remember them all leaving, just not coming back!

Tartsamazeballs · 08/09/2018 21:46

Jk Rowling said this about Snape:

Snape is all grey. You can't make him a saint: he was vindictive & bullying. You can't make him a devil: he died to save the wizarding world

He's an utterly compelling character IMO and any attempts to define him as good or bad just ends in a long winded circular argument. He's a textbook Byronic hero.

SapphireSeptember · 08/09/2018 21:46

Oh no. No no no no! I don't buy for a second that Cedric would have become a Death Eater! (Hufflepuff here.) Just NO!

But there were plenty of decent Slytherins, and I love Severus. Andromeda Black was badass and it's a shame we don't get to hear more about her.

shakeyourcaboose · 08/09/2018 22:40

James Potter was a horrible bullying arsehole, but because he was Gryffindor and was bullying a Slytherin that's alright?

RebelRogue · 08/09/2018 22:49

I agree about Snape being grey. He's utterly flawed and utterly human.

listsandbudgets · 08/09/2018 22:55

Don't forget that the sorting hat nearly put Harry in Slytherin. I wonder how he'd have turned out.

BoneyBackJefferson · 08/09/2018 23:03

LegallyBrunet
In fairness, Harry and friends had just stopped Voldemort getting the Philospher’s Stone which would have allowed him to rise to power again, they did kinda deserve all the extra points.

And broke a shit load of school rules in the process (and continued to do so through the books)

Lets not forget that Harry's dad was a bullying jock and his mum a cheerleader that dumped her friend.

Dumbledore is the sort of headteacher that on here would get slated for favouritism amongst other things..

ProfessorMoody · 08/09/2018 23:05

Yes there are good Slytherins.

Snape is not amazing. He's abusive.

Dumbledore wasn't a bad person, he did what he thought to be best, for the Greater Good.

strawberrypenguin · 08/09/2018 23:11

I would love JK to do an 'alternate universe' HP series where Harry was sorted into Slytherin.

FannyOutOfTheFarawayTree · 08/09/2018 23:19

Read Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality.

Basically, Dumbledore is playing a long game. Instead of cunning and ambitious, Slytherins are being allowed to become bullying and brutish. This is to create an incompetent next generation of death eaters who will be easier to beat ...

LeopardSpots1 · 08/09/2018 23:22

That would be great, strawberry! I also think it’s odd that Hagrid tells Harry that there’s no wizard gone bad who isn’t from Slytherin when he thinks it was a Gryffindor who went bad and caused Harry’s parents’ murders.

OP posts:
LeopardSpots1 · 08/09/2018 23:23

Really FarawayTree? That’s actually a really interesting theory.

Gersemi · 08/09/2018 23:30

BoneyBack, you can't seriously suggest Harry was in the wrong for breaking school rules in order to bring Voldemort down.

FilthyforFirth · 08/09/2018 23:41

Everyone that is upset at Harry & co being awareded points at the end completely miss the fact that Snape constantly takes points away for no reason at all.

Someone needs to balance him out. I am no Harry fan (find him a bit whiny) but Snape's treatment of him, especially when he is just 11 years old is so disgusting. You cant love Snape, you just cant!!

RebelRogue · 08/09/2018 23:45

@FilthyforFirth you can't just hate him either by the end.

FilthyforFirth · 08/09/2018 23:47

I know, I really want to though. I cant stomach how he treats Grffindor in general and Harry specifically.

But I do appreciate his sacrifice.

feelingnothing · 08/09/2018 23:48

I agree I thought this

RebelRogue · 09/09/2018 00:05

That's why he's such a great character. Not a great person, but a great character. I do prefer him to the one dimensional good/bad types.
